Beckhoff brings AI into the machine-control workflow: train a vision model, export its processing pipeline and connect its result to a PLC. The crucial choices concern timing, export rights and the capabilities actually available in your region.

In brief
  1. 01The offer TwinCAT tools for creating and executing industrial machine-learning models.
  2. 02Best fit Automation teams with a defined inspection task and control-system expertise.
  3. 03Research scope Public documentation and a proposed evaluation, without a machine trial.

01 / ProductModel development meets the machine controller

Beckhoff supplies industrial automation technology; its AI relevance is the connection between trained models and TwinCAT control programs. The Machine Learning Creator automates model development and can generate an ONNX model plus a PLCopen XML representation of the processing pipeline. This makes the handoff to controls engineering explicit: the output is something to integrate with a machine, rather than simply an attractive result in a training notebook.

The offer has separate layers. Creator provides the development environment, Computer Vision adds image-model training, and inference products execute trained models. A model-training subscription does not by itself establish which runtime, controller or camera configuration is included. Treat those as related components of a solution whose boundaries should be visible in the bill of materials.

The Creator portal describes a cloud-based workflow through data annotation, training and validation. It also separates released, beta and planned functions. That distinction matters when evaluating a live production requirement: a demonstration of a future signal-analysis capability cannot establish that the corresponding purchasable package is available today.

02 / AudienceStart with a control decision that can be measured

The strongest starting point is a machine with a stable inspection objective and visually variable inputs: checking an assembled part, sorting components or recognising an unacceptable surface condition. An automation team should already understand the consequence of a false acceptance and a false rejection. Those consequences determine the evaluation design before anyone chooses a model architecture.

A team using TwinCAT can investigate how much engineering work the integrated pipeline removes. An organisation with a different control platform should first establish its right to export a general ONNX model and the processing steps needed by its own runtime. Being able to load the model file is only one part of reproducing the original image preparation and output interpretation.

For broader factory digitalisation, Siemens offers a different automation ecosystem to examine. For an inspection system centred on packaged machine vision, Cognex is a more directly relevant comparison. Compare the accepted inspection decision and the engineering work around it; do not compare an entire automation platform with one training licence as though they were equivalent purchases.

03 / WorkflowProposed workflow: preserve the decision deadline

Consider a proposed inspection station that distinguishes complete assemblies from assemblies with a missing component. Collect images across shifts, illumination changes, component finishes and normal positioning variation. Keep complete production runs aside for evaluation so neighbouring images from the same run do not appear in both training and assessment. This is an editorial workflow proposal; Sequenced has not operated this configuration.

Define the target precisely. A whole-image classification may be enough when every image contains one consistently presented assembly. A task requiring the position of several components needs a different output. Use the current Computer Vision package and its released capabilities to establish scope, rather than assuming every function on the wider roadmap is enabled for your account.

Train candidate models and examine errors by physical condition. A high aggregate success rate can hide repeated failures on one finish or one camera angle. Preserve the annotation definition and the images on which the decision was disputed. The controls engineer needs to understand what each output means, including uncertainty and cases outside the intended operating range.

Next connect the result to the controller with an explicit timeout. The Machine Learning Server documentation describes asynchronous execution outside the deterministic TwinCAT process, including possible GPU acceleration. Decide what happens when a result arrives after the part has passed the rejection point. A late correct answer is still an unusable control decision.

Finally run the complete station under realistic load, recording accepted parts, rejected good parts, missed defects, delayed responses and operator interventions. Compare that result with the existing inspection process. Keep the earlier validated model and control logic available for recovery, and retest when camera placement or product variants change. The practical output of the pilot is a bounded operating envelope, not a universal claim about factory AI.

04 / PricingLicences distinguish training, export and runtime

The TE3851 ordering table lists annual Computer Vision subscriptions with either TwinCAT-specific export or open ONNX export, plus a monthly TwinCAT-specific option. No universal monetary tariff was verified. The export distinction is consequential for teams that expect to deploy outside TwinCAT or retain flexibility across machine suppliers.

The Resource Pack adds computing time, with term and export variants. Its public listing does not provide a single guaranteed training allowance applicable to every project. Ask for the included resources and how additional training is charged, particularly if the production process changes often enough to require repeated annotation and retraining.

At consultation, the Creator products listed regular delivery only in EU member states, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, Israel and New Zealand. Confirm the purchasing entity and deployment arrangement before planning a rollout elsewhere. The commercial assessment should also separate development access, runtime licences, industrial PC capacity, integration and continuing application support.

05 / DistinctionsTwo inference paths make timing an architectural choice

Beckhoff's runtime comparison distinguishes deterministic CPU execution with selected model/operator support from TF3820's separate-process, accelerated execution. This is a useful engineering tradeoff. A relatively constrained model may be preferable when the control cycle needs a predictable response; a larger model can be useful when the process can tolerate asynchronous completion.

The generated pipeline also makes preprocessing part of the integration conversation. A camera image may need resizing, normalisation or another transformation before the model receives it. Validation should check the deployed pipeline as a whole, since matching the weights alone does not establish matching outputs. Ask which generated elements remain editable and how changes are versioned alongside the PLC project.

The product family gives automation specialists a route into model development without requiring them to build a training system from scratch. That does not remove the need for a reliable definition of defects. The domain expert's knowledge moves into representative examples, labels and acceptance criteria; it remains essential even when architecture selection and training are automated.

06 / QuestionsRegional and roadmap boundaries affect the project plan

The TE3852 Signals and Time Series page currently identifies a product announcement with estimated market release in the first quarter of 2027. Do not treat its signal classification, anomaly-detection or forecasting descriptions as confirmation of a currently delivered package. A project that depends on those functions needs a separate availability discussion or a different supported implementation.

Cloud training and local inference have different data requirements. Establish which production images may be uploaded, how proprietary defect examples are retained and how models can be retrieved at the end of the subscription. An inference system running on a local controller does not, by itself, mean that every earlier development step stayed onsite.

No public-source review can establish the response distribution or inspection quality of your machine. Require a measured demonstration on the intended hardware, with the same camera input and competing workloads. Keep safety-related machine functions within their independently engineered control arrangements; this blueprint does not establish a safety certification for an AI inspection decision.

07 / DecisionSelect the deployment contract before optimising the model

Beckhoff is a substantial candidate when the buyer wants AI connected to industrial control and can describe the task's timing and error costs. A good first engagement resolves the available package, export entitlement and runtime behaviour together. Only then does model quality become a meaningful basis for deciding whether to extend the station or replicate it across machines.
