Clarivate applies AI to specialized information used in academic research, intellectual property and life sciences. Web of Science helps researchers discover literature and institutions understand research activity. Cortellis connects drug-development information and analytical tools. The common idea is to make curated evidence easier to interrogate. The useful question is whether the relevant licensed collection, its coverage and its source links support the decision you actually need to make.

01 / ProductA portfolio of research systems with distinct jobs

Clarivate's May 2026 Research Intelligence launch describes a platform for institutional funding, strategy and impact. It combines information about publications, patents, funding and other research activity. That is a different job from answering a literature question, although the same underlying evidence can contribute to both.

The extended Research Assistant connects discovery to funding opportunities and proposal planning. Its FAQ states that Web of Science Research Intelligence customers are entitled to the extended assistant. This is an institutional product relationship, not proof that any individual with a Web of Science login receives the same functions.

In life sciences, Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence combines curated biology, chemistry and pharmacology information with an AI assistant for comparing and summarizing drug data. Clarivate's portfolio should therefore be evaluated by collection and task. The company name is the coverage identity here; its separately named products are not interchangeable subscriptions.

02 / AudienceFor decisions that depend on the evidence collection

A university research office may want to connect emerging topics, potential collaborators and funding opportunities. A scientist may instead need to compare the evidence around a target or experimental model. Both benefit from domain structure, but they need different fields, rights and analytical methods. Establish the intended output before asking whether an AI assistant can answer the question.

For literature work, the Elicit blueprint provides a comparison focused on research synthesis workflows. The RELX blueprint helps frame another large information business applying AI across specialized professional collections. The meaningful comparison is the evidence available for a particular task, the workflow around it and the ability to inspect underlying material.

Clarivate is less suitable as an assumed substitute for unrestricted web search or access to every full-text paper. An index, an abstract, a source record and a licensed full text are different information objects. A team should test the actual material available through its agreement rather than infer access from the presence of a citation or a polished summary.

03 / WorkflowA proposed research-to-funding workflow with source checks

Consider a proposed workflow for a research office investigating a new program area. First define the scientific question and the inclusion boundaries: relevant fields, publication period and what counts as a meaningful connection to the institution. Ask the assistant to surface candidate themes, but retain the queries and selected evidence so another researcher can understand how the initial landscape was constructed.

Next, inspect the source records behind the themes. A cluster of publications can reveal activity without proving that the institution has the capability or facilities to pursue it. Check author affiliations, dates and the relationship between the cited work and the proposed program. Separate established expertise from a single adjacent publication. This is where domain knowledge adds value to the generated overview.

Use the extended assistant's funding-oriented workflow to explore possible opportunities, then have the research office verify the funder's current requirements and submission route. A thematic match is not proof of eligibility. The proposed output should be an evidence-backed shortlist with unresolved questions, rather than an automatically completed funding application or a prediction of award success.

For a life-sciences team, a parallel approach starts with a precisely defined drug or indication. The Cortellis CCI MCP documentation describes tools for drug details, searches, deals and source-linked answers in supported assistants. In a proposed competitive review, use those tools to assemble candidate records, then inspect the underlying development status by indication and geography before writing the comparison.

These are proposed workflows, not tests conducted with a Clarivate subscription. The important discipline is keeping the analytical question, retrieval conditions and source records connected. Otherwise, successive summaries can gradually erase distinctions such as preclinical versus clinical evidence, a global development program versus a regional approval, or a candidate collaboration versus an existing institutional relationship.

04 / Commercial modelSubscription rights follow the collection and integration

The reviewed product pages use institutional sales or demonstration routes and do not publish a universal numeric price. The Cortellis Drugs API page explicitly requires a paid license and application registration. A developer account alone therefore does not establish permission to retrieve the underlying commercial data.

The MCP documentation adds a useful availability distinction. It lists Claude, custom Copilot Studio agents and server-to-server access as supported routes, all requiring an active Cortellis subscription. The ready-made Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat connector is listed as not currently supported. Buyers should verify the exact route their employees intend to use rather than treating all products called Copilot as one integration.

Ask for a quote and entitlement statement covering the collection, user population, API or assistant route and intended outputs. If the project will distribute reports beyond the licensed organization, clarify those rights explicitly. This is especially important when a technically simple export becomes a customer-facing report or a reusable internal data service.

05 / DistinctionsDomain structure can make an answer inspectable

Cortellis offers structured search around drug, disease and chemical information, rather than relying only on an open-ended prompt. That structure makes it possible to examine whether two candidate records actually refer to comparable development contexts. A useful evaluation should deliberately include similarly named compounds, different indications and changes in development status to expose matching errors.

Clarivate also offers predictive analytics through its AI API. The public description explains that Cortellis Deals Predictive Analytics uses historical deal information and multiple attributes to estimate values and outcomes. This is a distinct statistical use of AI alongside conversational assistance. It should be evaluated as a model with assumptions and historical limits, not treated as another authoritative database field.

The combination of curated records, analytical methods and an assistant interface is the substantive attraction. It can reduce the effort required to formulate a search and explore a result. It does not remove the need to inspect coverage or judge whether a historical comparison applies. A transparent path back to evidence is more useful than an answer that merely sounds familiar to a specialist.

06 / Open questionsResolve coverage, refresh and inference before relying on it

The first question is whether the relevant evidence is present. Ask for representative searches from the exact collection under consideration, including less prominent journals, recent developments and the geographies that matter to the project. An apparently comprehensive answer can still be incomplete when the underlying collection excludes a necessary source or has not incorporated a recent change.

The second question is what the assistant adds to a source record. A record may state a development phase; a generated answer may infer commercial significance. Require those layers to remain distinguishable. For a prediction, ask about the target variable, historical evaluation and uncertainty. The existence of a sophisticated model does not establish that a deal will close, a clinical program will succeed or a valuation will be realized.

Finally, test how a research group preserves its work. Can the team retain the query, date, selected records and human corrections in a form permitted by its license? A useful result should survive a handoff to a colleague who did not see the original conversation. That operational requirement is particularly important for institutional reports and scientific decisions that will be revisited months later.

07 / DecisionChoose the collection before the conversation

Clarivate is worth considering when a research task depends on specialized, curated information and the organization needs a defensible path back to evidence. Start with the collection and access route, then evaluate the assistant around a representative task. The strongest buying case is a better research process whose limitations remain visible to the people using it.

Institutional research

Connect discovery and funding

Evaluate a program-planning question using the institution’s licensed collections and verify funding eligibility outside the generated narrative.

Assess Research Intelligence.
Life-sciences intelligence

Keep drug records and inference separate

Run a representative comparison and inspect indication, geography, development status and source evidence.

Assess the appropriate Cortellis collection.
General literature exploration

Check the access requirement first

If the task does not need licensed institutional or drug-development data, compare narrower research tools before committing to a broad subscription.

Match collection to task.
