Confident AI helps teams define what good AI behaviour means, test changes against that definition and investigate production failures. Its platform connects the DeepEval evaluation framework with datasets, tracing and collaboration. The central value is a repeatable decision process: a proposed improvement can be judged against preserved examples instead of a few convincing demonstrations. The quality of that judgement still depends on the examples, metrics and people behind it.

01 / ProductThe platform connects tests with operational evidence
Confident AI’s evaluation introduction describes workflows for assessing outputs, individual components and conversations. DeepEval supplies the code-based evaluation framework, while the platform provides shared datasets, reports and related operational tools. Confident AI also develops DeepTeam for red teaming, extending its quality tools to adversarial testing.
A dataset preserves the cases an application should handle. A test run applies chosen metrics to the application’s outputs. Production tracing records what happened outside the laboratory. Connecting these pieces can make a failure actionable: a team can retain the problematic situation, explain the expected result and check that a later change has not recreated it.
The metrics documentation distinguishes quality metrics from operational measurements such as latency and cost. That is a useful conceptual boundary. A response can be quick and inexpensive while contradicting the evidence it retrieved. Equally, a slower answer might be correct but unsuitable for an interactive service. Both dimensions matter, and they should not be collapsed into one attractive dashboard score.
02 / AudienceFor teams with a shared definition of acceptable behaviour
A good fit is a team maintaining an AI assistant whose behaviour changes when prompts, retrieval or models are updated. Engineers need a release check; product managers need to understand which user situations improved; domain experts need a way to challenge questionable outputs. A shared evaluation record can connect those different responsibilities.
The platform is less useful if nobody can articulate an expected outcome. A generic request to “make answers better” leaves the metric doing more conceptual work than it can justify. Begin with concrete failures: missing a required qualification, choosing the wrong tool, ignoring a relevant document or failing to ask for missing information. These can be translated into cases that reviewers understand.
The Braintrust blueprint provides another perspective on evaluation and experimentation. The LangWatch blueprint is relevant when simulated conversations and agent behaviour are central. Confident AI’s appeal is the combination of DeepEval-based tests and a shared platform for managing the quality process. Compare them using your own failure examples and team roles rather than choosing by the number of named metrics.
03 / WorkflowA proposed support evaluation begins with difficult cases
Imagine a proposed trial for an assistant answering questions about product returns. Gather a modest set of cases covering straightforward requests, exceptions and missing information. For each case, record the relevant policy and expected behaviour. Include examples where the correct action is to ask a question or decline an unsupported conclusion. This produces a more useful test than collecting only questions the current assistant already answers well.
The dataset guide distinguishes single-turn goldens from multi-turn scenarios. It also warns against pre-populating actual outputs and retrieved context in single-turn goldens, because these should be produced during evaluation. Keep the expected result separate from what the application actually did. Otherwise the dataset can accidentally become a record of yesterday’s behaviour instead of an independent standard.
Choose metrics that correspond to the failure. An answer-relevance metric addresses whether a response answers the question; a faithfulness check addresses its relationship to supplied context. A custom rule can express a requirement specific to the returns policy. Review a sample of passing and failing results manually, including cases near the threshold. This calibration is essential when an LLM acts as the judge.
Run the baseline and proposed change against the same cases. The quickstart describes local DeepEval and remote evaluation routes. Keep the model, metric configuration and dataset version identifiable so that a difference can be explained. If multiple factors change at once, the result may indicate a regression without revealing its cause.
For release checks, the current CI/CD guide describes Python end-to-end testing through DeepEval’s pytest integration, with evaluations run locally. Do not assume every component-level or remote workflow has the same CI support. The proposed trial should finish with a reviewable pass/fail decision and examples explaining it, rather than a claim that a single score certifies the whole application.
04 / PricingPlans and trace retention use different cost units
| Route | Published basis | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0; 2 seats, 1 project | Five test runs weekly; 1 GB-month of trace spans |
| Starter | US$200/month | 5 GB-months included; trace overage applies |
| Team | US$2,000/month | 75 GB-months included; custom RBAC and SSO |
| Enterprise | Custom | Deployment, residency and contract scope |
Plan details from Confident AI pricing, consulted 28 October 2026. US dollars per organisation per month; trace usage and model execution require separate attention.
The pricing page lists US$1 per GB-month for additional trace spans on Starter and Team. Retained telemetry can therefore matter as much as incoming traffic. A service with long retention and large messages has a different cost pattern from one that stores small spans briefly. Do not substitute request count for the platform’s storage-related measure.
The free tier is also bounded: the page says additional weekly test runs are locked and trace spans beyond the allowance are dropped. That makes it suitable for an initial evaluation, but a production monitoring design needs to consider what evidence disappears at the limit. The paid tiers change capacity and collaboration, not merely the visual appearance of a dashboard.
The quickstart requires model-judge configuration for relevant DeepEval metrics. Provider costs generated by tests are distinct from the platform subscription. To estimate a real programme, account for how often cases run, how many candidate responses are compared and which evaluators invoke a model. Large, frequently repeated suites can create substantial inference activity even when application traffic is modest.
05 / DistinctionsA failure can become an owned test case
The strongest distinction is the path from an observed problem to a maintained evaluation. The dataset tools support goldens, comments and reviewer participation, while the platform’s wider offer connects quality checks with tracing. That gives a team a place to resolve a disagreement about an answer and preserve the resolution for later releases.
Custom metrics also make the quality model more explicit. A general relevance score may miss a requirement to mention an exclusion or use an approved action. A carefully written criterion or code-based check can make that requirement visible. The benefit is not that custom rules are automatically correct; it is that a reviewer can examine and revise the rule instead of treating the evaluator as an opaque authority.
Code-driven tests are particularly useful when evaluation belongs in the same change process as application code. A failing case can accompany a proposed fix. Product and domain reviewers can still work with the preserved examples, rather than needing to read every implementation detail. The platform earns its place when those roles converge on decisions more consistently.
06 / QuestionsA judge is another component that needs evaluation
The main uncertainty is evaluator agreement with informed human judgement. An automated judge can reward fluent wording, miss an important exception or respond differently to a changed prompt. Preserve examples where the metric disagrees with reviewers and use them to refine the criteria. A high pass rate on an easy dataset is weak evidence about difficult production situations.
Dataset coverage is equally important. Synthetic cases can broaden the range of inputs, but they may repeat assumptions made by the model generating them. Include real failure patterns where permitted and deliberately construct edge cases based on the product’s responsibilities. Keep sensitive customer content out of reusable tests unless the organisation has established the appropriate handling.
Finally distinguish quality assessment, observability and governance. Recording a trace does not establish that an action was authorised, and an evaluation result does not prove regulatory compliance. Confirm the plan-specific controls and deployment arrangements needed for the data being collected. The useful outcome is a documented quality process with known gaps, rather than an unsupported promise that hallucinations have been eliminated.
07 / DecisionUse the platform to make release decisions explainable
Confident AI is worth evaluating when a team needs to preserve examples, compare changes and explain why a release is acceptable. Start with a small set of meaningful failures and a reviewer who can judge them. Expand only when the measurements produce decisions the team can defend.
Add a regression set
Connect a bounded end-to-end test suite to the actual application behaviour and preserve failing examples.
Calibrate the criteria
Review disagreements between automated scores and domain judgement before expanding the dataset.
Budget retained evidence
Estimate trace volume, retention and overage separately from platform and evaluator-model costs.
