Datafold combines AI-assisted data engineering with a way to check the resulting data. Its Migration Agent translates legacy workloads, while Data Diff compares source and target values. That relationship is the useful proposition: a migration should preserve the intended results, not merely produce code that compiles in the new database.

In brief

01 / ProductAI generation and data comparison solve different problems

Datafold’s current documentation describes specialized agents, a context layer and quality tools. The tools can support migrations, development and testing. The distinction between generating a transformation and checking its output matters because syntactically correct SQL can still change null behavior, rounding, joins or the interpretation of dates.

The Migration Agent guide describes LLM-based translation with a feedback loop using compilation errors and data discrepancies. Datafold’s team supervises the translation process and supplies a report linking to validation diffs. It is therefore a managed migration offer, not simply a self-service chatbot that a buyer runs without vendor involvement.

Data Diff compares values within or across data systems and can integrate with review and monitoring workflows. Comparing output is complementary to ordinary tests: a row count may remain unchanged while individual amounts or categories are wrong. Conversely, matching the old output is not proof that the old business logic was correct.

The Data Knowledge Graph gathers engineering context for AI tools, but the documentation explicitly labels it private beta. Treat it as an optional capability requiring access confirmation. A migration or testing evaluation should not depend on unrestricted availability of the graph simply because it appears in a platform overview.

02 / AudienceFor migrations with more risk than a syntax converter can resolve

The clearest fit is a data team moving a substantial legacy workload to another platform while preserving reporting or application behavior. Stored procedures, dependencies and dialect-specific semantics can make the job more difficult than rewriting individual statements. The team needs evidence that the new pipeline produces the accepted result on representative data.

Datafold is also relevant to routine analytics engineering when a pull request changes data transformations. A reviewer can use actual output differences to investigate the impact of the change. This is particularly useful where code looks simple but joins or filters affect many downstream records.

dbt provides a useful comparison around transformation development and testing practices. Monte Carlo offers a different lens on ongoing data reliability and incident investigation. Datafold’s distinctive question is often comparative: what changed between these two outputs, and is that difference intended?

A small migration with transparent business logic may be manageable with existing tests and manual review. At the other extreme, a project whose target semantics are intentionally changing cannot define success solely as parity. The business must identify where the new system should differ so that automated correction does not reproduce defects the migration was meant to remove.

03 / WorkflowProposed workflow: migrate a revenue transformation

Consider a proposed migration of a revenue dataset from a legacy warehouse to a new platform. Start with the business contract: time zone, currency handling, refunds, recognition date and the definition of a canceled transaction. Freeze an agreed evaluation window in both systems so differences are not merely the result of one source receiving later transactions.

Provide the relevant code, schemas and dependency context through the agreed migration process. Datafold’s documentation says access may come through a connected code repository or catalog access for stored procedures. Keep a clear inventory of the objects included in the work. A successful translation of the visible SQL does not prove that external scheduling, hidden functions or downstream reports have also migrated.

Use the translated transformation to create a target dataset, then compare it with the legacy result. The diffing guide identifies data connections, dataset names and a unique row key as basic inputs. A poorly chosen key can make the comparison misleading, so validate uniqueness and define how duplicate business records should be represented.

Inspect mismatches at the row and column level. In this proposed example, separate date-boundary differences from amount rounding and missing joins. The agent can use discrepancies as feedback, but the team must decide whether each mismatch is a translation defect, a source-data problem or an intended business change. Keep that decision with the accepted migration evidence.

Run a second evaluation on another representative period that includes returns, late-arriving records and a month boundary. This reduces the chance of accepting a transformation that happens to match one convenient snapshot. Compare the important aggregates as well as individual values; financial totals can reveal a pattern that is difficult to see in a long list of row differences.

The diff documentation explains that cross-database comparison co-locates datasets in a centralized database and supports sampling, filtering and column selection for scale. Decide what data may move and which fields must be fully compared before the test. A sampled comparison cannot be reported as proof that every record matches.

For cutover, retain the validation report and a list of explicitly accepted differences. Keep monitoring the agreed critical tables through the transition window. This is an editorially proposed workflow, not a report of a Datafold deployment we have tested. Its goal is reviewable evidence that the new pipeline satisfies the business contract.

04 / Commercial modelMigration scope drives the commercial agreement

The migration product page describes fixed-price delivery based on legacy code objects and environment complexity, with contractual timeline and parity commitments. It does not publish a general tariff. Those are vendor offer terms to negotiate for a defined scope, not a universal guarantee of a particular cost saving.

Commercial and access terms from Datafold migration and deployment documentation, consulted 17 October 2026.

The Butterfly deployment guide says Datafold operates all three deployment forms. Customer-hosted does not mean the vendor lacks access: the documentation explicitly says Datafold retains access to conduct the migration. That boundary should be understood before treating deployment in your cloud account as an isolated self-operated tool.

Prepare a quote request with an object inventory, target architecture and examples of difficult workloads. Separate code translation and data validation from wider organizational work such as retraining users, configuring the entire cloud environment or redesigning reports. The migration page distinguishes its technical delivery from broader implementation services.

05 / DistinctionsValidation gives the agent a concrete correction signal

The strongest distinction is the relationship between translation and observable output. A language model can propose a dialect conversion, but value comparisons provide a concrete signal when the proposal changes results. This does not remove the need for review; it makes the review more specific than asking whether a generated query looks plausible.

Datafold also exposes tools to compatible coding agents through MCP. The MCP permissions reference maps tools to permissions and hides tools unavailable to a service account. That gives an engineering team a documented basis for scoping an assistant that needs to inspect schemas or launch diffs.

The potential value of the context layer is related but separate. A coding agent that can inspect lineage and business logic may make better-informed changes, while the diff checks whether the resulting data changed as intended. Since the Knowledge Graph is private beta, evaluate any dependence on that context with the vendor rather than assuming it is a standard entitlement.

06 / Open questionsParity needs a well-defined comparison boundary

The first unresolved question is what counts as equivalent. Floating-point tolerance, timestamps, collation and null semantics can produce differences that require explicit decisions. A blanket instruction to make outputs identical may preserve a legacy defect or suppress an intentional improvement. Define the allowed differences before interpreting the agent’s correction loop.

The second question is data movement. The documented cross-database technique centralizes data for comparison, while in-database diffing uses queries within the target system. Confirm the applicable method, selected columns and retention behavior for the proposed deployment. Do not infer a zero-copy architecture from a general claim about working across databases.

Access scope deserves particular care when agents are connected. The MCP reference includes query execution and administrative tools alongside read-oriented operations. Give the pilot account only the permissions needed for its intended task, and confirm the underlying database account’s rights. Tool discovery and database authorization are distinct boundaries.

Finally, distinguish a successful migration report from a completed business cutover. The translated data may be correct while an application still points at the old warehouse or a scheduled job has not moved. Assign responsibility for those remaining steps and define how the organization will verify them. Datafold’s documented capabilities do not prove that every surrounding system is in scope.
