DDN builds data infrastructure for demanding computing workloads, with an expanding focus on AI training, retrieval and inference. Its portfolio includes parallel file storage, object and metadata services, platform management and integrated systems. The useful question is where an AI application waits for data and which part of the proposed architecture removes that bottleneck. Buying faster storage is not automatically the answer to an overloaded model server or a poorly designed retrieval pipeline.
- 01The data paths EXAScaler and Infinia address different storage and data-service requirements within the portfolio.
- 02The operating layer Horizon adds resource and tenant management around AI infrastructure.
- 03The purchase choice HyperPOD packages a broader system; a component purchase and an integrated deployment need different evaluation scopes.
01 / ProductSeveral layers, not one universal storage appliance
DDN’s Data Intelligence Platform groups capabilities around moving data through AI workloads. That umbrella should not obscure the individual products. A training job repeatedly reading a large dataset, a checkpoint write and an interactive retrieval request have different access patterns. A sensible architecture identifies those patterns before assigning them to a product or storage tier.
EXAScaler is the Lustre-based parallel file-system offer. Its role includes high-throughput training and scientific computing, where many workers may access shared data concurrently. The current page also describes tiering and data-management capabilities. Those features should be evaluated as part of a configured system, because media, networking and client behavior can determine the useful throughput an application receives.
Infinia broadens the portfolio toward object, file and metadata-aware services. DDN describes S3 and POSIX access, metadata indexing, tenancy controls and key-value or cache uses associated with inference. This creates a different set of questions from a pure training file system: how data is indexed, how concurrent services are isolated and what latency the application sees for its actual request mix.
02 / AudienceOrganizations with a shared AI data problem
DDN is relevant to enterprises, research environments and infrastructure providers operating substantial shared datasets or accelerator fleets. A team may need to support several workloads at once: data preparation, training, evaluation and interactive inference. The challenge is often contention and placement across those stages, rather than the maximum speed of one isolated sequential read.
The case is weaker when an application uses a hosted model and a small document collection with no demonstrated infrastructure bottleneck. In that situation, improve measurement before introducing a new storage platform. A slow answer could come from model generation, external tools or a retrieval query. Each cause points to a different intervention and a different budget owner.
WEKA and VAST Data offer useful comparison points for AI data infrastructure. Compare a specific workload and system configuration across candidates. A brand-level benchmark comparison can conceal differences in dataset size, caching, network topology or protection settings that matter more than the headline result.
03 / WorkflowMap raw data, checkpoints and inference context separately
Horizon adds a platform layer for allocating infrastructure and presenting AI services. DDN describes tenant policy, resource management, usage visibility and catalogs that can include notebooks and inference services. These are operational capabilities around storage and compute; they do not establish that a particular tenant’s model is accurate or that its dataset is authorized for the intended use.
A proposed evaluation is a shared research platform that trains models on an approved image collection and later serves an internal inference endpoint. It should use production-shaped data access without exposing sensitive material unnecessarily. This is an editorial proposal, not an installation or benchmark performed by Sequenced.
- 01
Record the current bottlenecks
Measure dataset loading, preprocessing, checkpoint writes and endpoint latency separately. Include concurrent users and record the existing cache state. This establishes whether the experiment is testing storage throughput, metadata operations, network capacity or a model-serving limitation.
- 02
Assign data to explicit services
Preserve the approved source dataset, give training workers a suitable shared data path and place inference artifacts or context where serving can reach them. Decide which copies are authoritative and how updates propagate. Do not rely on product naming to settle that ownership question.
- 03
Apply tenant and recovery controls
Give research groups bounded resources and appropriate data permissions. Exercise a failed worker, an unavailable storage component and restoration of a known checkpoint. Record both service disruption and the operator actions needed to recover, alongside ordinary throughput measurements.
The HyperPOD offer combines DDN Infinia with NVIDIA AI Data Platform capabilities and Supermicro systems for enterprise inference and retrieval workflows. That is an alternative starting boundary for the pilot: evaluate the integrated stack rather than assuming that independently chosen components will reproduce the packaged architecture’s behavior.
04 / PricingA configured-system purchase requires a configured quote
The reviewed product pages and specialist-contact route do not establish a public universal per-terabyte or per-token tariff. DDN sells infrastructure whose cost depends on configuration and scope. Ask for an itemized proposal that distinguishes hardware, software, support and implementation, then identify which assumptions could trigger additional capacity or licensing requirements.
| Offer | Published commercial position | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| EXAScaler or Infinia deployment | Discuss the workload and request a configured proposal | Specify capacity, media, network, protection and support requirements. |
| Horizon platform layer | Confirm the scope in the proposed AI platform | Identify included services, tenant controls and operational responsibilities. |
| Enterprise AI HyperPOD | Integrated system inquiry | Separate compute, networking, storage, software entitlements and delivery services. |

Use usable protected capacity in the financial model, not an unqualified raw disk total. Include spare capacity, replication or other protection overhead, metadata needs and growth headroom as applicable to the proposed configuration. A system sized only for the current dataset can become constrained when experiments, checkpoints and retained model versions accumulate.
The operational comparison should also include power, cooling, network changes and engineering time. If a proposed system increases accelerator utilization, estimate the value using the organization’s own workload and capacity plan. Do not multiply a vendor’s best-case utilization claim by the entire GPU budget and call the result an independently established saving.
05 / DistinctionsThe portfolio follows data across the AI lifecycle
DDN’s distinction is the breadth of the data path it addresses. Parallel file access remains important for training and HPC, while object, metadata and inference-oriented services address other stages. A buyer can investigate how those layers fit together instead of treating every AI workload as a large file-transfer problem. The integration between them deserves as much scrutiny as each component’s specification.
Horizon also changes the discussion from hardware ownership to service operation. When several teams share infrastructure, they need understandable allocation, permissions and usage records. A technically fast system can still be difficult to operate if administrators cannot explain which tenant consumed capacity or why another workload was delayed. The platform layer should be judged on that everyday administrative work.
HyperPOD offers a more packaged route for organizations that prefer a coordinated architecture over assembling the whole system themselves. That can reduce some design decisions, while concentrating reliance on the proposed component combination and support arrangement. Ask what can be expanded or replaced independently and what changes require revalidation of the broader system.
06 / QuestionsDemand evidence for the actual workload
The public pages contain substantial performance and efficiency claims. They are vendor statements, not measurements from this review. Request the test conditions behind any claim that influences procurement, including dataset characteristics, cache state, concurrency, network layout and protection settings. Then reproduce the relevant acceptance criteria with the organization’s own representative workload.
For mixed tenants, ask how quality-of-service controls behave during a large ingest or checkpoint burst. For metadata services, examine index freshness and permissions when source data changes. For inference caches, establish what happens when cached state is unavailable or stale. These questions expose whether the architecture meets the application’s requirements under ordinary disruption, not merely under an ideal demonstration.
Finally, clarify deployment and support boundaries for an isolated or hybrid environment. Confirm which administrative functions require connectivity, how updates arrive and who handles a problem that crosses GPU software, storage and networking. Sequenced has not tested a DDN system, measured its GPU utilization or verified recovery behavior. Those are practical acceptance tasks for a scoped pilot.
07 / DecisionBuy the data path your application actually needs
DDN warrants consideration when measured data access and shared infrastructure operations limit an AI program. Begin with a workload map and a repeatable test, then compare component and integrated-system proposals against that evidence. The right outcome is a dependable service with understood costs and recovery behavior, not merely a higher storage benchmark number.
