Esker applies AI to the everyday documents and decisions that move money through a business. Invoices, orders, remittances and customer enquiries become structured work connected to finance systems. Its Synergy AI proposition is most useful when recognition, validation and exception handling operate together: reading a document correctly matters less if the resulting transaction is posted to the wrong place.

In brief
  1. 01Best fit Finance and customer-service teams managing complex, repeated document workflows across ERP systems.
  2. 02Mechanism AI extraction and recommendations work with business rules, approvals and system connections.
  3. 03Boundary Proposed workflows are illustrative; vendor automation claims are not independently measured here.

01 / ProductA finance execution suite rather than a single extractor

Esker spans source-to-pay and order-to-cash processes. Its Accounts Payable product captures invoices, extracts data, checks it against purchasing information, routes approvals and transfers validated records to an ERP. Its Order Management product applies a related pattern to incoming customer orders. The common problem is moving unstructured requests into controlled transactional systems.

Synergy AI combines document recognition, machine learning, language understanding and generative assistance within those workflows. The company describes recommendations, exception handling and coordination across finance activities. A buyer should distinguish the AI’s interpretation of a document from the business rules that determine whether the proposed transaction is allowed.

In September 2026 Esker introduced its Synergy Agentic Framework, connecting specialised Business Agents, conversational finance and governed access. The announcement describes a broader direction for execution across workflows. It is not a reason to assume every named agent is available in every existing module or contract; establish the exact deployment scope.

02 / AudienceWhere document variation meets financial controls

A strong use case is a finance operation dealing with multiple entities, suppliers and ERP environments. The documents vary, but the business still needs consistent treatment of purchase orders, receipts, coding and approval. Esker’s relevance comes from bringing these pieces into one operating flow, not simply from reducing the number of fields a person types.

Customer-service teams can have a parallel need. An order may arrive by email with an attachment, contain an obsolete product code and require a delivery-date correction. The productive unit is the resolved order, not the extracted PDF. Teams with only a handful of simple transactions may prefer a narrower tool, particularly if the existing accounting software already provides sufficient controls.

Basware provides a useful comparison for invoice and accounts-payable automation. HighRadius is relevant when receivables and finance execution drive the requirement. Compare the exact process boundaries and ERP responsibilities. A product that is attractive for invoice capture is not automatically the best fit for order exceptions or collections work.

03 / WorkflowA proposed invoice-exception pilot

Choose one legal entity and a recurring invoice type, such as goods purchased against a purchase order. This is a proposed pilot rather than a test performed for this article. Use documents that represent the real variation in supplier formats, partial deliveries and credit notes. Agree the expected accounting treatment before asking the system to automate it.

Capture the invoice and inspect the extracted header and line data. Then compare it with the purchase order and goods receipt. The AP workflow explicitly joins extraction with validation and matching. Evaluate a plausible but wrong supplier match as well as a visibly unreadable field; the former is easier to miss and can carry greater consequences.

Separate ordinary mismatches from decisions that need business judgement. A quantity discrepancy might require the warehouse to confirm a delivery, while an unexpected charge may need the buyer to check the agreement. Route each case to an accountable person and preserve the source document and conversation. Do not let an AI-generated explanation become the sole evidence that an exception was resolved.

Only post a validated invoice after the defined approval conditions are satisfied. Reconcile the ERP record with the approved source data, including entity, currency and accounting period. This checks the entire path from document to transaction. A high field-extraction rate can coexist with poor end-to-end results if the integration silently transforms a value or creates a duplicate.

Once that path is understood, explore a related customer-order workflow. Order Management validates extracted information against ERP products, pricing, quantities and delivery details. Keep the two pilots separate enough to identify their different exceptions. A supplier invoice and a customer order may look similar as documents while requiring different authority to change them.

Measure the workload left for people: which exceptions recur, how often they are routed incorrectly and whether the underlying data can be improved. Use those findings to change the process before increasing autonomy. A successful pilot should make the remaining judgement work clearer, not merely move it into an unfamiliar queue.

04 / PricingScope the commercial offer around the process

The reviewed product pages lead to demonstrations and a sales discussion rather than displaying a universal list price. Use the Esker contact route to obtain a quote for the relevant modules and operating footprint. This article does not substitute a reseller estimate or a competitor’s pricing guide for an Esker tariff.

Ask the quote to identify the documents and transactions covered, the ERP connections, implementation work and any AI-specific entitlement. Also clarify how exceptions, reprocessing and expansion to another entity are treated. These are commercial questions to resolve, not a claim that Esker always charges for each item in that way. The agreement should make it possible to forecast the cost of the actual workflow.

The receivables page describes unlimited user access for its solutions. That is useful context for collaborative AR work, but it should not be extrapolated into a universal licence rule for every Esker product. Keep module-specific terms and the newer agentic framework distinct when comparing offers.

05 / DistinctionsTransaction context gives the AI a concrete job

Esker’s meaningful distinction is the relationship between a document and the business record it is supposed to create or update. A model can extract a product number from an order, but a useful operating system must also decide whether that number is valid for the customer and whether an exception needs attention. This makes ERP integration and master data quality central to the AI proposition.

The Accounts Receivable suite extends the same idea into credit management, invoice delivery, cash application, claims and collections. These are linked activities with different decision rights. A payment allocation suggestion can help an analyst while a decision to release a blocked order may remain with an authorised credit manager.

The agentic framework announcement explicitly distinguishes probabilistic reasoning from controlled execution. That is a useful evaluation lens: ask which part of a proposed action is inferred, which rule authorises it and which system records the final result. A polished conversational interface should make those boundaries easier to inspect, not hide them.

06 / QuestionsProve the awkward cases before widening autonomy

Include supplier identity changes, duplicate documents, mismatched tax information and partial receipts in the evaluation. The purpose is to see whether the workflow recognises uncertainty and sends it to the right person. Do not count an exception as automated merely because the system generated a message asking someone else to resolve it.

For generative replies to customers or suppliers, inspect the source of each factual statement. An order-status response should reflect the current system state and the team’s actual commitments. If the assistant cannot confirm a delivery date, the useful behaviour is to surface that gap. A fluent answer with an unsupported promise creates extra work for the service team.

Public product pages do not establish deployment time, extraction accuracy for a specific supplier population or availability of every announced agent. This research did not run an Esker tenant or post a transaction. Confirm the module, region, ERP connector and approval model needed for the proposed process before treating a demonstration as a production design.

07 / DecisionChoose the transaction you want to improve

Esker is a strong candidate when the business can describe a repeated document-to-transaction problem and has owners for the exceptions. Start at that boundary. Expanding from AP to orders or receivables can be sensible, but each additional process needs its own evidence that the data, controls and handoffs work together.

01

Invoice-heavy finance team

Pilot one entity with real matching exceptions and reconcile approved records into the ERP. Expand only after the team can explain where automation stops and judgement begins.

Start with the posting boundary
02

Complex B2B order desk

Evaluate product, price and delivery discrepancies alongside extraction. Measure the resolved order and customer communication rather than counting fields read correctly.

Test order exceptions
03

Broad autonomous-finance programme

Map decision rights across AP, receivables and customer service. Confirm the available agents and controls for each process before treating the suite as one unattended workflow.
