iManage connects legal and professional knowledge with the place where firms already organise documents and email. Its AI offer spans interactive questions, automated document enrichment and access for external AI tools. The attraction is continuity: work can begin from a governed matter record. The evaluation hinges on whether that record is complete, correctly permissioned and eligible for the specific AI service.

In brief
  1. 01Core offer. Document and email management with additional AI services for finding, understanding and using firm knowledge.
  2. 02Best fit. Legal and professional teams with a substantial matter repository and established document governance.
  3. 03Commercial distinction. Ask iManage and other AI services require additional purchase and the supported cloud endpoint.

01 / ProductThe document system supplies the context

iManage Work organises documents, email and chat around shared workspaces. Its documented functions include version handling, search, collaboration and Microsoft 365 integration. Those are important foundations for legal AI: the useful document is often a negotiated version stored beside an email explaining why a clause changed. A folder full of nearly identical files needs more context than a filename can provide.

Ask iManage adds natural-language repository questions, source-linked answers, summaries, clause analysis and structured outputs. It is a way to interrogate existing knowledge rather than a substitute for the matter file itself. A reviewer should still be able to establish which version supplied an answer and whether the cited passage remains applicable to the current instruction.

AI Enrichment has a different job. It classifies documents and extracts structured information that can improve how a repository is organised and searched. The product page describes processing existing and new material, with updates after document changes. This is a background knowledge-management capability; it should not be confused with a lawyer asking a question in a chat interface.

A third route is MCP access, which lets connected AI tools work with iManage content under authenticated user permissions. The documentation describes both reading and controlled writing. Together these products cover finding material, adding structure and acting through another application, but each introduces its own entitlement, configuration and review questions.

02 / AudienceA substantial existing repository makes the strongest starting point

The clearest fit is a practice that repeatedly reconstructs what its own firm has already learned. A knowledge lawyer may need a defensible precedent set; a transaction team may need the history behind a negotiated position; an associate may need to locate an approved example without asking several colleagues. These are bounded questions about institutional work, with someone available to assess the result.

A team choosing its first document system has a broader decision. Migration, naming conventions, workspace design and access ownership will determine how useful any later AI becomes. An assistant cannot reliably distinguish an approved precedent from an abandoned draft if the repository treats both as equivalent. Budget for that information-management work alongside the software.

Harvey provides a useful comparison when the desired starting point is a specialist legal AI workspace. Intapp is relevant when the main issue spans professional-services relationships, risk and operational context. Compare where the authoritative matter record lives and how it reaches the person making a decision, rather than comparing conversational interfaces alone.

03 / WorkflowA proposed precedent exercise follows the version trail

Consider a pilot for a team preparing a limitation-of-liability clause for a familiar type of transaction. Select an authorised historical matter set with a known approved example, an earlier draft and a negotiated exception. This is a proposed evaluation, not a report of testing. The team should know the expected distinctions before it asks the assistant to find useful precedents.

Begin by recording the client, jurisdiction, transaction type and date range that make an example relevant. Ask for candidate clauses with their source documents and an explanation of why each belongs in the comparison. A phrase match alone is insufficient: a clause from a differently structured deal may resemble the target wording while allocating risk differently.

Open the candidates in their original matter context. Check execution status, document version and any accompanying explanation of the negotiated position. Ask the reviewer to identify the controlling example before generating a comparison. This ordering makes a retrieval mistake visible early, before polished drafting makes the selected material appear more authoritative than it is.

Next, compare the approved and exception versions in a small table. Separate the wording, commercial consequence and reason for the exception. Where the reason is absent, preserve that gap instead of asking the assistant to reconstruct an intention. A useful output can say that the record contains no explanation; it need not turn every blank into a confident narrative.

Then give a second reviewer the proposed clause and source trail without the original conversation. Have that person verify the comparison and mark which conclusions require partner input. Save only the approved work through the firm’s normal document process. The pilot should establish how a generated draft becomes a reviewed matter document, including who takes responsibility for its final wording.

Finally, repeat the retrieval using a colleague who has narrower matter access, and after replacing the superseded draft. Record wrong-version selections, missing exceptions, source-opening effort and time spent correcting the comparison. These measures address the practical value of repository AI: whether it reduces reconstruction work without concealing why a precedent was selected.

Commercial scope from Ask iManage, iManage Cloud and MCP access, consulted 28 October 2026. No numerical public tariff was established.

An existing iManage installation is therefore not enough to establish immediate AI access. Ask the account team to identify the environment, proposed modules, activation work and any usage limits in writing. A demonstration in a vendor-controlled environment may be informative, but it does not establish what an older or differently hosted customer deployment can run.

For a useful cost comparison, price the complete precedent exercise: repository readiness, licensed services, implementation assistance and reviewer time. The first useful unit is an accepted comparison with traceable sources. A low apparent cost per generated answer means little if the team spends longer finding the underlying document or correcting a version mistake.

05 / DistinctionGoverned knowledge can become usable in more than one interface

The cloud platform is built on Microsoft Azure and provides the managed infrastructure behind the document environment. For an established customer, extending that environment can reduce the organisational work of creating another disconnected knowledge store. This is an architectural attraction, not evidence that every integration avoids copying content or that every deployment meets a particular client’s requirements.

The enrichment controls include document-level overrides and library-level field visibility, alongside existing security and retention rules. The public page lists English-language processing and supported regions. A firm can therefore evaluate enrichment as a maintained classification process, with someone responsible for correcting important mistakes, rather than assuming machine-generated metadata is permanently authoritative.

The MCP documentation also places decisions with administrators: which tools connect, which users act and whether writing is permitted. It explicitly asks customers to understand how a connected AI vendor handles content. Permissioned retrieval does not by itself settle the downstream processing agreement. That boundary deserves attention when an external assistant can turn retrieved material into a new document.

06 / QuestionsCheck the answer, the boundary and the update path

The first unresolved question is retrieval coverage. A source-linked answer shows the basis for a conclusion, but it may omit a more relevant document outside the selected scope or one with poor extracted text. Include difficult scans, ambiguous matter names and an example whose importance comes from an email attachment. Review missed evidence alongside incorrect statements.

The second is the difference between user permission and appropriate use. Someone may legitimately read a matter while still needing approval to send its content to another provider or write a derivative document into a shared location. Establish those rules for the actual connected application, and inspect the resulting audit record with the administrator who will operate it.

The third is maintenance after deployment. Decide who reviews enrichment corrections, retires outdated precedents and retests integrations after a change. This Blueprint is based on public product documentation, not access to a customer tenancy. Actual retrieval quality, language performance, regional configuration and contract terms remain matters for the proposed evaluation.

07 / DecisionChoose the knowledge bottleneck before choosing the AI surface

iManage merits evaluation when valuable legal knowledge already sits in a substantial document estate and the recurring problem is finding and applying it responsibly. Start with one practice area and an answer that can be checked from the matter record. Expansion is easier to justify once source quality and approval work are visible.
