Understand KUKA iiQWorks.Copilot, its simulation workflow, licensing boundaries and the checks needed before a digital layout reaches production. This blueprint examines documented products and proposes an evaluation; it does not report hands-on testing.
- 01The offer. An AI assistant edits and explores robot-cell scenes inside iiQWorks.Sim.
- 02The fit. Engineering teams creating or adapting layouts for KUKA robot applications.
- 03The boundary. Generated scenes require engineering review; AI credits and simulation licences have separate scope.
01 / ProductAI assists the engineering scene before it reaches the controller
KUKA supplies robots, automation systems and engineering software. This blueprint concentrates on a specific AI offer: iiQWorks.Copilot inside the iiQWorks.Sim environment. Its November 2022 ownership announcement records the transfer of the remaining minority shares to a Midea-owned holding company. The engineering software sits within that broader robotics and automation business.
The Copilot product page describes natural-language creation and modification of simulation scenes. Engineers can ask to add or move components, change properties and start simulations. KUKA says the assistant runs within the PC-based engineering workflow, requires internet access and uses Azure cloud infrastructure. Local application execution should therefore not be confused with an entirely offline AI system.
iiQWorks.Sim supplies the surrounding robot configuration, simulation and offline engineering capabilities. Copilot is an interface for working in that environment. A scene generated from a prompt still represents assumptions about tools, fixtures, equipment and motion. Its usefulness depends on how well those assumptions match the eventual physical cell.
02 / AudienceThe buyer is usually the team responsible for the layout
A cell designer or integrator who repeatedly assembles similar layouts has a plausible use case. Adding another conveyor, repositioning a robot or making a variant for a different floor plan can involve many small edits. An assistant may reduce those interactions while leaving the engineer in control of dimensions and process requirements.
Technical sales teams can also use a preliminary scene to communicate an application concept. They should distinguish that concept from an accepted production design. A visually persuasive animation can conceal missing tooling mass, unrealistic part presentation or an unmodeled interruption. The customer needs to know which inputs are measured and which remain estimates.
The Siemens blueprint provides an adjacent example of AI connected to engineering project context. The NVIDIA blueprint addresses broader AI and simulation infrastructure. KUKA's offer is most relevant when KUKA robot engineering is already part of the work. A team choosing its first automation platform should compare the full engineering and operating environment, not only the convenience of a prompt box.
03 / WorkflowPropose a layout-change exercise with an inspectable result
Consider a packaging cell that needs a second pallet position. The proposed exercise asks Copilot to help construct and revise the scene while an engineer evaluates the resulting arrangement. Use a copy of a representative project, with dimensions and equipment supplied by the project owner. Do not begin with the instruction to optimize the entire factory; make the required change precise enough to judge.
First, record the starting layout and the design constraints. Include the robot model, tool envelope, conveyor height, pallet dimensions and areas reserved for access. Mark approximate geometry so it cannot be mistaken for a surveyed obstruction. A prompt cannot supply missing knowledge of the building or machine simply because it produces a complete-looking scene.
Ask for one bounded edit, such as adding the second pallet at a named offset from the existing station. Inspect the selected component, orientation and units. If the request uses relative language like beside or behind, replace it with a dimension or reference frame before accepting the result. This is especially useful for exposing how the assistant interprets ambiguous design language.
Next, ask for the associated layout adjustments and review the change as a set. A moved conveyor may affect the robot approach, a part sensor or the space available for maintenance. Keep the original and modified project so the reviewer can see what changed. A summary from the assistant can help navigation, but the actual scene and parameters are the evidence.
Use the licensed simulation features to examine the intended cycle and its limits. The engineering suite connects planning with robot configuration and virtual commissioning. An animation that completes does not establish that all real disturbances have been represented. Add the interruptions that matter to this cell, such as an unavailable pallet position or a downstream stop.
Compare the assisted workflow with the team's normal scene-editing method. Measure accepted edits, correction effort and time to a reviewable project. Do not count the first generated scene as a completed engineering task. If natural language speeds up object placement but requires extensive correction of properties, that is a narrower result worth understanding rather than hiding inside a single productivity number.
The final deliverable should be a project revision with a short design rationale, unresolved assumptions and evidence from the selected simulation functions. Physical commissioning remains a separate stage with the responsible engineers. This is a proposed evaluation, not a report that Sequenced operated KUKA software or validated a robot cell.
04 / PricingSeparate free configuration, advanced simulation and AI credits
KUKA's current simulation comparison distinguishes free iiQWorks.Sim Basic from Advanced and additional capabilities. The engineering-suite page describes Advanced licences on an annual basis. Do not interpret a free entry point as an entitlement to every virtual-controller, modeling or connectivity function.
The Copilot page describes a credit-based model with a monthly quota and says alternative licence packages are planned. The inspected public page does not provide a currency price or a complete credit-consumption table. Ask for the current package, included volume, reset behavior and the exact software entitlement needed to use it.
A commercial comparison should include the workstation, required simulation add-ons and engineering review. KUKA's regional sales and service page offers an inquiry route for projects and support. Use that route to confirm a configuration for the intended country; this article does not infer a global tariff from a regional offer or an earlier field-test promotion.
| Route | Commercial basis | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Sim Basic | Free entry-level configuration | Confirm required task is included |
| Sim Advanced and add-ons | Annual Advanced licence; scoped extensions | Identify simulation and connectivity entitlements |
| Copilot | Monthly credit quota; no public currency amount established | Confirm current package and internet requirements |

05 / DistinctionsThe advantage comes from editing a structured engineering model
The meaningful distinction is that Copilot acts inside a scene with engineering objects. A generic assistant can describe a layout, but the engineer must then translate that description into the simulation environment. When an integrated assistant makes the edit, the result can be inspected in the same project used for later planning. That is a useful hypothesis for the pilot, not proof that every requested edit will be correct.
The broader environment also provides continuity. KUKA's July 2026 engineering and operating-system update places iiQWorks alongside iiQKA.OS2 and the controller platform. This helps explain the direction of the product family. It does not make a generated layout safe or turn a controller-level security claim into approval of the entire customer installation.
Our assessment is that the assistant is most promising for repetitive scene construction and iterative exploration. The decision should rest on whether it reduces the work needed to reach a trustworthy project. More scene variants are useful only when the team can compare them against the same requirements and preserve the reason for the selected design.
06 / QuestionsResolve data handling and licence scope before importing a real project
The Copilot page's reference to Azure processing is consequential for companies whose CAD and factory layouts are confidential. Request the applicable data-flow explanation, processing location, retention terms and administrative controls for the offered package. Marketing language about anonymized data cannot by itself establish whether a particular customer project is suitable for upload.
Also verify the release and licence combination used in the demonstration. Basic, Advanced, add-ons and Copilot each describe a different part of the offer. A feature visible in a vendor demonstration may rely on an entitlement absent from the proposed order. Keep a list of the tasks the buyer needs and map each to the quoted configuration.
Finally, ask what happens when the connection or credit allowance is unavailable. The engineering team should know which ordinary project operations remain usable and how work is resumed. This is an operational question about the selected package, not a claim that the product has suffered an outage. It helps prevent a convenient assistant from becoming an unexpected dependency during a deadline.
07 / DecisionEvaluate time to an accepted design, not time to an animation
KUKA's AI assistance has a clear role in robot-cell engineering: helping people manipulate and explore a simulation scene. Start with a real but bounded layout change and assess the complete path to review. The strongest outcome is a faster, well-understood project revision whose remaining assumptions are visible to the people who will build and operate the cell.
Pilot one layout revision
Compare accepted project edits and correction time with the normal engineering method.
Label the concept accurately
Use scenes to communicate assumptions and separate preliminary geometry from approved design.
Quote the complete toolchain
Map the proposed tasks to Basic, Advanced, add-ons and Copilot before assigning a budget.
