Mastra provides a TypeScript framework for building AI agents and a commercial platform for deploying and observing them. It brings model calls, tools, memory and explicit workflows into one development environment. Its central appeal is to software teams that want an agent to become a maintainable application: a system with inspectable decisions, controlled actions and a clear operating model after the initial demonstration.

In brief
  1. 01The offer Build agents and structured workflows using a TypeScript codebase, with memory and execution traces.
  2. 02The fit Product engineers building custom AI behavior that needs to integrate with an existing application.
  3. 03The boundary This assessment reads public documentation; it does not establish reliability, task success or deployment performance.

01 / ProductA framework and an operating platform around the same agent

The Mastra overview presents the company’s offer across a framework, deployment, observability and engineering support. The framework supplies application primitives; the hosted service supplies a managed route for running and inspecting the resulting projects. This distinction matters because adopting the programming model does not automatically require adopting every commercial service around it.

An agent combines a model, instructions and callable tools. The agent documentation describes iterative reasoning until the model produces a final answer or reaches a configured stop condition. Tools turn an answer generator into something capable of interacting with software. Their permissions and input validation therefore form part of the application’s behavior, not merely its integration plumbing.

Workflows provide an explicit sequence when the order of operations is already known. Steps have input and output schemas and can call ordinary functions, agents or external services. The developer chooses where judgment is useful and where deterministic control is preferable. Suspension and resumption make it possible to preserve progress across a pause rather than rebuilding the entire conversation.

02 / AudienceFor engineers who need to own the application behavior

Mastra fits a TypeScript team building an internal research assistant, an operations tool or an AI feature inside a customer product. The team can keep ordinary business rules in application code while using a model for ambiguous language tasks. It is especially relevant when a successful chat prototype has exposed a harder problem: how to understand and control what happens between the request and the final answer.

The LangChain blueprint offers a comparison for a broader agent-development ecosystem, while the Pydantic blueprint examines a Python-oriented approach. Language choice affects staffing and integration as much as model capability. A TypeScript team should compare the code it must maintain, the diagnostics it can use and the deployment responsibilities it retains.

A business user seeking a finished support agent will still need engineers to select tools, define authorization and operate the application. A framework does not arrive with your company’s refund rules or document permissions already implemented. Conversely, a narrowly scoped classification endpoint may not need persistent memory or an elaborate multi-agent arrangement at all.

03 / WorkflowA proposed returns assistant with a deliberate approval boundary

Consider a proposed assistant that helps support staff investigate a delayed product return. This is a design example, not a tested Mastra implementation. Start with read-only tools for the order, shipment status and current return policy. Each tool should accept a validated identifier and return the minimum information needed for the case, using the signed-in employee’s permissions.

Use the agent to interpret the employee’s question and assemble a proposed explanation. Place eligibility calculations in a workflow step with explicit inputs, such as purchase date and product condition. This keeps an arithmetic or policy decision from depending on the model’s phrasing. Store the rule version beside the result so later policy changes do not obscure why an earlier recommendation was made.

The memory guide distinguishes message history, structured working memory, semantic recall and observational memory. For this proposed assistant, retain a case identifier and necessary context rather than treating the entire customer history as universally reusable memory. The documented memory mechanisms persist through configured storage providers; choosing the store and access boundaries remains an application responsibility.

Suspend the proposed refund workflow for an employee decision before any payment-changing operation. On resumption, fetch the order again and confirm that another employee has not already issued the refund. A saved approval is evidence of intent at one moment; it should not override a later change in the underlying business record. Make the action idempotent to avoid duplicate effects after retries.

Use observability to inspect the model interaction, tool calls and workflow steps as a connected trace. Ask a reviewer to explain a rejected case from that record. Include an unavailable shipment service, an ambiguous order identifier and a policy document containing misleading instructions in the evaluation set. The useful result is an assistant that stops or escalates clearly when it cannot establish the facts.

04 / PricingHosted usage and self-hosted software have different cost boundaries

The current pricing page separates Mastra Platform from self-hosting. Hosted Starter is listed at $0 per month with 100,000 observability events, 24 CPU hours and 15 days of retention. Additional usage is listed at $10 per 100,000 events and $0.35 per CPU hour. Free entry therefore has a metered operating boundary, rather than promising unlimited production execution.

Teams is displayed at $250 per month, with one million events, 250 CPU hours and six months of retention. Its listed additional rates are $8 per 100,000 events and $0.25 per CPU hour. Enterprise uses custom pricing and negotiated volume, retention and support. The open-source self-hosted framework is Apache 2.0; licensed enterprise self-hosted features are quoted separately with an annual-fee model.

The same tariff lists a persistent server at $100 per project on Starter and Teams, and Gateway model tokens at market rate plus 5.5%. Memory tokens, retrieval storage, database operations and storage have separate allowances and meters. Budget these selected services alongside external tools and your own infrastructure. Forecast cost from a representative completed case, including failed attempts and retained diagnostic data, rather than CPU time and events alone.

05 / DistinctionsExplicit workflows complement open-ended agent reasoning

The useful distinction is the ability to combine judgment and fixed control flow within one application. An agent can interpret an unfamiliar request while a workflow enforces required order and typed handoffs. For a support tool, this can make the difference between an attractive conversation and a process that the next engineer can reason about when a customer disputes the outcome.

Memory is similarly presented as several mechanisms with different purposes. A short factual preference, a complete message history and a semantic search result are not interchangeable records. Choosing deliberately can make the application easier to inspect and reduce accidental reuse of irrelevant context. It also creates a concrete test: does a later answer use the correct case state and avoid another customer’s information?

Tracing connects the same application pieces during operation. The documentation describes spans for agent runs, workflow execution, tool calls and model interactions, with correlated logs and feedback. These records can help distinguish a slow external service from repeated model deliberation. Their usefulness depends on instrumenting the real route and retaining enough detail to diagnose it.

06 / QuestionsLong-running work still needs application-level guarantees

Suspending a workflow does not by itself establish exactly-once behavior in every external system it calls. Test what happens when the business action succeeds but the acknowledgment is lost. The application needs durable action identifiers and a way to reconcile external state. This is particularly important when an employee resumes a case after another worker has modified it.

Memory also creates deletion and tenancy questions. Decide which records belong to a user, a shared case or an organization, and verify that retrieval uses those boundaries consistently. The public overview describes memory features, but it cannot establish that a particular storage configuration meets your retention policy or that every custom tool respects the same authorization rules.

Confirm the exact hosted plan and self-hosted enterprise entitlements before relying on a control such as SSO or a contractual uptime commitment. The pricing page distinguishes those arrangements, and a local framework demonstration cannot prove the commercial service’s terms. This article did not create a Mastra account or measure its hosted execution limits.

07 / DecisionEvaluate one agent whose decisions need to be explained

Mastra is a strong candidate for TypeScript teams that want to turn agent behavior into an application they can inspect, revise and operate. Begin with one workflow whose consequences are understandable and whose correct outcome can be checked. Judge the pilot by the quality of its handoff and failure behavior as well as the fluency of its final response.
