Paycom applies AI to familiar HR work: finding employee information, reviewing requests and helping people understand their pay. IWant provides a conversational route into the company’s single-database software, while Beti supports the payroll process itself. The value depends on the quality of those shared records and the rules people configure around them.

In brief
  1. 01Best fit Employers that want employee self-service and payroll operations within one HCM system.
  2. 02Mechanism IWant retrieves permitted data and supports selected approvals; Beti prepares payroll for employee review.
  3. 03Boundary Paycom says IWant is included without token charges. The underlying HCM subscription and implementation still need a quote.

01 / ProductIWant changes how people reach the underlying HR system

The IWant product page describes typed questions and mobile voice-to-text for accessing policies, applicant information and employee records. It can direct users to the appropriate screen and lets managers review selected payroll-impacting requests. The scope is the organisation’s Paycom data, rather than an unrestricted research assistant for the wider web.

Paycom’s launch announcement explains the single-database approach and desktop and mobile access. The company presents consistency of the underlying data as a reason for reliable answers. That is a design proposition, not a guarantee that a mistaken employee record or outdated policy will become correct when retrieved conversationally.

Beti addresses another part of the job. It builds recurring payroll from workforce information and prompts employees to inspect their pay before submission. IWant and Beti should therefore be evaluated together where appropriate, but not described as the same feature: one helps people find and interact with information, while the other structures the payroll cycle.

02 / AudienceThe relevant audience is a workforce willing to use self-service

An employee who repeatedly asks HR about leave balances or a change in their pay has a clear reason to use IWant. A manager who needs to review time-off or punch-change requests has another. Both tasks are close to existing records, which makes the answer or decision easier to compare with the source.

The operating model matters as much as the interface. Employee participation can improve the information entering payroll, but the organisation must make the review process understandable and accessible. A workforce that cannot comfortably use the app will need another support route. Conversational access should reduce navigation effort without making assistance harder to obtain.

ADP is a useful comparison for payroll and HCM breadth, while UKG offers a reference for workforce operations and embedded AI. Compare the required employee experience, local payroll scope and manager workflow. A compelling chat demonstration alone does not resolve which underlying payroll system fits the organisation.

03 / WorkflowProposed workflow: resolve a pay question before the deadline

Choose one ordinary payroll cycle and a small group of participants. Establish the expected employee records and the approval owner before testing. Ask a participant to find the information behind a known pay difference, such as recorded hours or a deduction. The reviewer should be able to compare the response with the actual record and the explanation HR would normally give.

Next, examine a supported manager request. Paycom describes reviewing and approving punch changes and time-off requests within IWant. Check the employee, dates and requested change before approval. Distinguish an information lookup from an action that modifies the inputs to payroll, and record which role can perform each step.

Use Beti’s employee review process to see whether the relevant correction reaches the payroll preview. Its documentation says employees can inspect pay and address outstanding issues, but cannot change their pay rate. That distinction is important: employee participation does not transfer authority over compensation settings to every worker.

Include an unanswered policy question in the pilot. The IWant FAQ says the assistant searches only the data in the organisation’s Paycom setup. A useful result may therefore be an honest absence of an answer and a clear escalation to HR. Measure the effort required to resolve that gap rather than rewarding the system for producing an answer to every prompt.

This is a proposed evaluation. Sequenced has not used Paycom to run payroll or approve an employee request. The initial evidence should show whether users can locate the right information, preserve approval responsibilities and resolve an issue before submission. It should also record the support needed by employees who cannot complete the process independently.

04 / PricingIncluded IWant access is different from the price of HCM

Paycom states on the IWant page that the feature is available to all users without an additional AI charge or token-based bill. That provides a clear answer about the feature’s advertised incremental cost. It does not establish the total price of payroll, benefits, time management or the rest of the software package.

The public demo route offers a personalised discussion rather than a numeric tariff for the complete suite. No universal per-employee monthly HCM price was verified in the consulted primary material. Buyers should request a quote for the actual workforce and chosen modules, keeping the included-AI statement separate from the rest of the commercial scope.

Paycom’s implementation page describes a dedicated company team handling setup, migration and training with the customer. The costs, responsibilities and timetable of that transition matter if the organisation is changing payroll providers. A low incremental AI price does not remove the need to validate historical pay, benefits and workforce records.

An evaluation should also account for the time people spend reviewing their own information. If employee self-service moves work earlier in the cycle, compare the whole process rather than only the payroll administrator’s screen time. That is a proposed measurement approach, not a claim that Paycom achieves a particular saving.

05 / DistinctionsThe single record links information access to payroll preparation

The most useful distinction is the connection between the question, the employee record and the payroll process. A familiar employee interface can reduce the need to navigate several modules to find an answer. But the benefit comes from the organisation maintaining one coherent account of the employee, not merely from adding a natural-language box.

Paycom’s AI standards distinguish routine transactions governed by configured rules from employment decisions about people. The page describes human oversight and examples such as approvals within set limits. Buyers should ask which decisions are deterministic rules, which involve model interpretation and where a person can inspect or change the result.

The company’s security material describes the controls around its environment. Those vendor statements are useful inputs to a security review; they are not a substitute for establishing the customer’s role permissions and appropriate access to employee information. The relevant test is whether the right person can reach the right record for the task being performed.

06 / QuestionsAccuracy claims still depend on the data and rules

IWant’s marketing uses strong language about accurate, immediate answers. A single database can reduce contradictory copies, but it can also hold an incorrect value consistently. Include outdated policies, incomplete profiles and a recently changed record in the evaluation so the team can see how the assistant handles the conditions that actually generate HR questions.

The implementation material describes an organised transition and typical adoption timing. That should not be turned into a guaranteed deadline for a complex employer. Multiple entities, payroll histories and benefits configurations can alter the work required. Obtain a plan for the specific transition, including who signs off on the first payroll.

For organisations operating across countries, distinguish availability of the HCM interface from the scope of local payroll services and rules. The consulted IWant pages establish desktop and mobile access, not universal payroll coverage. Confirm the intended location and product before assuming the same employee journey works everywhere.

07 / DecisionEvaluate the employee journey and the payroll result together

Paycom belongs on an HR AI shortlist when the organisation wants a conversational way into a connected payroll and workforce system. IWant’s included access is useful, but the stronger decision is whether the underlying data model and self-service process fit the employer.

A good pilot follows one question from the employee’s initial request through any manager review to the payroll preview. Keep the supporting record visible, confirm the limits of each role and document unresolved questions. Expand when the whole journey becomes easier to understand and operate.
