Sandisk’s enterprise SSD range addresses several distinct AI storage jobs: feeding active compute, retaining read-heavy datasets and building large flash repositories. The company is now separate from Western Digital. A useful evaluation therefore begins with the current Sandisk product identity, then maps each SSD family to the amount and pattern of data the application will actually write and read.

01 / ProductThree SSD families serve different parts of the AI data path
The enterprise SSD comparison places SN861 in performance-oriented AI, HPC and mixed-workload use, SN655 in read-intensive scale-out storage, and SN670 in capacity-intensive data lakes and analytics. That is a portfolio of different tradeoffs. Choosing the biggest or newest model without identifying the data path can buy capacity that is poorly matched to write behavior or pay for performance the workload cannot use.
The SN670 product page describes UltraQLC and BiCS8 NAND, PCIe Gen5 connectivity and capacities up to 122.88 TB. It also identifies power-loss protection, end-to-end data protection and security options. Those features belong to the selected SKU and firmware context; a portfolio-level statement should not replace the exact configuration record used by a server or storage-system supplier.
SN655 targets read-intensive cloud and server environments. Meanwhile, Sandisk’s AI-factory explanation positions SN861 around active training and inference data movement, with attention to form factor and thermal integration. The practical split is between an active working path and a larger repository, even when both use flash.
The corporate separation FAQ confirms that Sandisk became independent of Western Digital in February 2025. Some flash products continue to carry licensed WD names. Sandisk supplies flash products, while Western Digital supplies HDDs and storage platforms. That distinction matters when a procurement list mixes older Ultrastar or WD branding with current Sandisk part numbers.
02 / AudienceThe buyer needs authority over both drives and system behavior
Sandisk is most directly relevant to infrastructure teams that control a server’s drive selection or a storage platform’s qualified configuration. They can match physical form factors, PCIe support, firmware and the workload’s endurance needs. A developer renting a managed database usually buys a service with latency and capacity commitments instead. The underlying SSD brand may inform a technical discussion, but it does not grant direct control of that service’s storage design.
One useful audience is a team building a retrieval system with a large on-disk index. Another is a training platform retaining prepared shards and checkpoints. These workloads may both be labelled AI, yet their writes can differ substantially. A relatively immutable shard store is not the same storage problem as an index that repeatedly compacts, merges or rewrites its data. The latter can generate more physical writes than the application’s incoming document volume suggests.
The Micron blueprint offers a related memory and flash-supply perspective. The NVIDIA blueprint covers the compute platform that consumes data from the storage path. Compare Sandisk at the drive and system-integration boundary, then ask whether changing that layer improves the application rather than only an isolated device measurement.
03 / WorkflowA proposed retrieval pilot separates ingest from steady-state serving
Consider a proposed retrieval-augmented generation service holding a growing technical-document corpus. Begin by measuring document ingestion, embedding generation, index construction, query serving and scheduled index maintenance independently. Storage may dominate one stage and barely affect another. If an external embedding API is the main bottleneck, changing local SSDs will not necessarily improve the user-visible workflow.
Create a repeatable test collection with fixed document versions and query sets. Build the same index on the current supported configuration and on a qualified Sandisk-based alternative. Preserve identical database settings and memory allocations. Compare query-tail latency at the intended concurrency, index-build elapsed time and the amount of data written during maintenance. This is a proposed comparison, not a report of tests performed for this article.
Sandisk’s comparison table lists materially different endurance classes across families. For example, it presents SN670 at 0.35 drive writes per day, while SN861 U.2 variants include 1 and 3 DWPD choices. Treat those as selection inputs tied to a stated product and warranty basis. A read-oriented repository and a frequently rewritten working index should not automatically use the same drive simply because both fit physically.
Use operating-system and device telemetry to compare the service’s actual writes with the selected model’s allowance. Include index compaction and checkpoint rotation, not just newly ingested files. A low average ingestion rate can hide bursts of rewriting. Keep enough free space for the database’s maintenance process so that a capacity-focused design does not become unstable when the repository approaches its intended fill level.
Exercise sustained mixed activity after preconditioning the device with representative data. Record temperature, throttling behavior and completion-time tails while ingestion and queries overlap. Sandisk’s selection guide emphasizes steady-state testing and power/performance tradeoffs; the team’s own trace should determine the acceptance threshold. A peak sequential-read figure is not a substitute for the latency seen by a retrieval request.
Finally, test replacement and restoration through the system vendor’s supported process. Confirm that firmware updates, health alerts and spare-drive identification are handled by the operational tooling. The pilot should leave a reproducible configuration and a maintenance procedure, not just a faster benchmark graph. If those responsibilities sit with an OEM, evaluate the OEM-supported Sandisk part rather than an unrelated retail substitute.
04 / PricingEnterprise quotes and consumer storefronts are different routes
| Route | Commercial basis | Resolve before deployment |
|---|---|---|
| SN861 | Enterprise SSD selected by form factor, capacity and endurance | Qualified model and working-path workload |
| SN655 | Read-focused enterprise SSD; product and sales-inquiry routes | Read/write mix and supported server configuration |
| SN670 | Capacity-oriented UltraQLC enterprise SSD | Write allowance, fill level and maintenance pattern |
| Commercial inquiry | Sandisk explicitly permits quote requests for enterprise SSDs | Quantity, delivery and applicable support |
Commercial basis and family positioning from Sandisk’s enterprise SSD guide, SN655 and SN670, consulted 19 October 2026. No reliable current monetary tariff was extracted.
The SN670 product page says quote requests are available for commercial-grade products including enterprise SSDs. Its product pages expose sales-inquiry or quote routes alongside dynamic commerce templates. Research could read the technical positioning, but the price fields did not provide dependable current amounts. This article therefore uses the documented commercial route without turning an unresolved template into a public list price.
For a useful comparison, quote the capacity and endurance variant that the application needs. A cost-per-terabyte calculation alone can favor a drive that does not fit the workload’s write pattern. Include spare capacity and the server’s supported bill of materials. If the new design reduces the number of servers needed to hold the corpus, account for that effect separately from any claim about query performance.
Also keep the commercial supplier and the operational support owner clear. Sandisk’s separation FAQ assigns support for its flash products even when they retain licensed WD branding. An OEM-supplied drive may still need service through that OEM’s process. Resolve the actual route for the purchased part rather than assuming that every similarly named drive carries identical firmware and service arrangements.
05 / DistinctionsThe portfolio makes flash density and write tolerance explicit choices
Sandisk’s useful distinction is a range that lets a buyer discuss performance-oriented storage and high-capacity flash within one supplier’s portfolio. The data does not all need the same device characteristics. A large retained repository can be evaluated differently from a write-heavy index or active model-working directory. That separation can improve the design even if the final deployment uses only one of the families.
The AI-factory material also treats form factor as part of deployment. U.2, E1.S and E3.S are physical and thermal choices within server designs, not interchangeable labels. The useful question is which form factor the supported system can cool, service and connect correctly. A generic claim that a drive has an NVMe interface does not settle that integration work.
06 / QuestionsEndurance, qualification and stock remain product-specific
A family name can cover different capacities, security choices and endurance specifications. Write the exact part number into the evaluation record and confirm the terms that apply to that model. In particular, do not transfer the strongest endurance claim from one SN861 variant to every member of the portfolio. The comparison guide is a starting map, while the selected product documentation and quote define the actual purchase.
The high-capacity SN670 page supports an architectural discussion of flash repositories, but no general delivery commitment was verified. Dynamic product templates included multiple availability states, so they cannot establish universal stock. Confirm a current supply schedule for the required capacity and region before designing a rollout that depends on it.
Public vendor material does not establish that one SSD will improve a particular model’s quality or inference speed. Storage helps when the application waits for data or cannot hold the required collection economically. Keep the acceptance test attached to those observable constraints and retain the original workload trace so that later firmware or database changes can be evaluated consistently.
07 / DecisionChoose the SSD family after identifying the write pattern
Sandisk is a substantive AI infrastructure supplier because the data layer spans more than one kind of flash workload. A productive selection identifies which data are actively rewritten, which are repeatedly read and which mainly consume capacity. Then it validates the exact SSD inside a supported system with realistic concurrency, temperature and maintenance behavior.
Your active index is write-heavy
Measure compaction and maintenance writes and evaluate a suitable performance/endurance variant.
Your retained corpus is large and read-focused
Evaluate capacity-oriented flash with realistic fill level, restore behavior and retrieval concurrency.
You are buying a managed AI service
Evaluate the service’s data-access commitments and export path rather than selecting a bare SSD.
