Shopify puts an AI assistant beside the products, orders and reports that merchants already manage. Sidekick helps interpret store information and prepare actions, while Shopify Magic supplies generation features inside everyday tools. The useful buying question is whether this shortens a particular operating task while leaving the merchant able to inspect the evidence and approve the resulting change.

In brief
  1. 01The offer Shopify Sidekick and Magic
  2. 02The fit Merchants with maintained catalogs who want assistance inside an existing commerce system.
  3. 03The scope Public-source research with a proposed workflow; no authenticated product testing or measured performance results.

01 / ProductSidekick works inside the commerce platform

Shopify is the commerce company behind Sidekick and Magic. Its AI tools overview distinguishes built-in assistance from connections to third-party AI platforms. That distinction matters when deciding where a task should happen: the store administrator, an external assistant and a customer-facing channel can have different permissions and different reasons to handle the same product information.

Sidekick is the conversational assistant in Shopify admin. Shopify describes guidance, content creation, analysis, app generation and supported store tasks, with changes presented for review. Pulse supplies recommendations in the admin home. These are parts of Shopify’s offer; Sidekick is not an independent storefront, outsourced store manager or separate company.

Shopify Magic is the wider set of embedded generation features. It covers tasks such as product-description writing, media generation and theme work. Shopify says the tools are free across subscription plans while warning that individual feature availability can vary. A merchant should therefore check the particular editor and device needed for the job, rather than assume every AI capability has identical access.

02 / AudienceUseful when the product record is already dependable

The strongest starting point is a merchant whose products, variants and inventory already have clear owners. A category manager can investigate an underperforming collection and prepare better descriptions without first exporting the entire catalog into another application. The work still requires judgment: a weak description and an unavailable size can both depress sales, but they call for different interventions.

A new seller may value help drafting content, yet needs to supply the actual material, dimensions, compatibility and care instructions. Fluent copy cannot establish those facts. A merchant with extensive custom fulfillment logic should also start with a narrow admin task, because the meaning of an order state may depend on information maintained outside Shopify.

The Klaviyo blueprint examines marketing and service tied to commerce customer data. The Intercom blueprint examines support conversations. They address adjacent jobs. Shopify’s getting-started guide explicitly says Sidekick cannot converse with customers on the merchant’s behalf, so internal assistance should not be purchased as a substitute for a staffed support channel.

03 / WorkflowA proposed merchandising review for one collection

Consider a proposed pilot for an outdoor retailer reviewing one backpack collection. The objective is to identify products needing clearer information and prepare specific edits, with no automatic price or inventory changes. This is an evaluation design, not a report of using Sidekick. Choose a collection small enough that the category owner can inspect every changed record.

Begin with a defined reporting window and an explicit question: which products have enough traffic to merit attention but unusually weak sales relative to other products in this collection? The guidance documentation describes generating ShopifyQL queries, displaying charts and exporting reports. Inspect the generated report’s definitions before interpreting its ranking. A product with few visits should not be treated as equally informative as a frequently viewed item.

Next separate explanations that require different evidence. Compare stock availability, variant completeness, returns and the wording on the page. A seasonal color that sold out quickly can look weak during the remaining period; changing its description would not solve the absence of stock. Record competing explanations in the review sheet rather than letting the assistant compress them into a single confident diagnosis.

For one selected item, give the assistant an approved specification sheet and ask for a description that answers three shopper questions: what fits inside, how it is carried and how it should be cared for. Explicitly exclude unsupported claims about waterproofing, airline approval or warranties. Have the merchandiser check the draft against the source record, especially any measurements and product variants.

Preview the proposed change on the product page and compare it with the previous description. Check that important qualifiers survive the rewrite and that the language suits the actual audience. Approval should apply to that concrete edit. A request to improve a collection is too broad to serve as continuing authority to change its prices, tags or availability later.

After applying an accepted edit, reopen the product record and storefront to verify what changed. Keep a small record of the original wording, new wording and intended benefit. Review the next comparable reporting period without promising a causal lift: campaigns, availability and seasonality may also change. If a controlled experiment is unavailable, describe the result as observational.

The useful pilot outcome is a repeatable decision process: a report the team understands, a defensible explanation, a reviewed product change and an owner for checking it later. Measure the amount of correction required and whether important facts were preserved. Fast drafting alone is a weak success criterion if the review becomes longer or the catalog becomes less reliable.

04 / PricingThe store plan remains the main commercial commitment

The pricing page localized to Australia during this review. The figures below are AUD for that displayed market, not universal prices or currency conversions. Annual-equivalent monthly amounts require yearly billing. Sidekick appears among included AI features; payment processing, apps and other commerce costs still affect the total bill.

For an existing merchant, the decision is usually whether included assistance improves an operating process, not whether to move the entire business solely to obtain AI writing. For a new store, compare checkout, staff access, fulfillment integrations and payment costs first. Those ongoing requirements will usually matter more than the convenience of an assistant during initial setup.

05 / DistinctionsContext and approval are the practical distinctions

The setup guide explains that the page currently open in admin contributes context to a question. It also states that Sidekick cannot make store changes without approval. This combination is useful: the operator can begin near the relevant record and still inspect the proposed result. It does not establish that every proposed change is correct or that a user will notice every consequential detail.

The advantage over an isolated writing prompt is the connection between investigation and administration. A merchant can start with a store question and end with a concrete revision in the same operating environment. The corresponding risk is that a persuasive explanation may feel more authoritative because it appears alongside real store data. Read the report and product record, not just the assistant’s summary.

Magic also lets a team use smaller AI features without adopting a conversational workflow for every task. Someone who only needs a first description draft can stay in the relevant editor. That is a sensible adoption path when the team’s biggest problem is repetitive writing rather than analysis or complex store administration.

06 / QuestionsConfirm the exact feature and the data behind it

Two boundaries are particularly relevant. Shopify’s setup page says mobile-browser admin does not currently support Sidekick, directing phone and tablet users to the Shopify app. It also lists limits around editing images in themes or product lists. Test the device and task combination before making it part of a store-opening or merchandising procedure.

Keep the source of product claims visible. An assistant can summarize a supplier sheet but cannot establish that the supplier’s statement is correct for every variant. For multi-market selling, check local measurements, translated qualifiers and country-specific availability separately. The review should be proportionate to the consequence of the claim, rather than identical for every adjective.

Public documentation establishes the intended feature set and approval model. This research did not test store access, generated code, query accuracy or changes in sales. A meaningful next demonstration would use the merchant’s own ordinary catalog problem and show both the proposed edit and the resulting saved record.

07 / DecisionChoose one store task before expanding the remit

Shopify’s AI is most compelling when it reduces the distance between understanding a store problem and preparing a reviewable action. Begin where the merchant already has a dependable source of truth and an obvious person to approve the result. Expand to more complex tasks only after the first workflow produces useful, inspectable work.

Situation 1

An established store needs better merchandising

Pilot report interpretation and product-copy preparation for one collection, with its category owner approving every edit.

Start with an existing catalog
Situation 2

The requirement is customer support

Evaluate a customer-facing support workflow separately; Sidekick’s documented remit does not include talking to shoppers for you.

Separate the service decision
Situation 3

The business is choosing a commerce platform

Decide on operational fit and the full store bill, then treat embedded AI as one contributor to that choice.

Buy the commerce fit
