Valohai is an operations platform for teams that build and maintain their own AI systems. It connects datasets, training jobs, evaluation results and deployment history, while running workloads on infrastructure the team selects. Its current offer also covers language-model comparison and retrieval experiments. The reason to consider it is practical: a model that works today is difficult to maintain if nobody can reconstruct the code, data and configuration that produced it.
- 01The offer Manage model experiments and pipelines alongside their data and execution history.
- 02The fit Teams with repeated training or evaluation work and infrastructure requirements that a single hosted model API does not solve.
- 03The boundary This is a public-source assessment, not a measurement of training speed, model accuracy or infrastructure savings.
01 / ProductAn operating layer for models and their dependencies
The Valohai product overview groups the platform around shared experiment knowledge, compute orchestration and developer interfaces. A pipeline joins steps such as preparing data, training a model and evaluating the result. The platform keeps the resulting records together, rather than leaving a team to connect notebook names, storage folders and deployment tickets by hand.
Its model workflow page describes dataset caching, job queues and automatic resource allocation. Those capabilities matter when repeated runs use large image collections or different hardware. Caching can reduce repeated transfers, but the actual benefit depends on where data lives, which workers reuse it and how often the dataset changes. No transfer reduction was measured for this article.
The LLM workflow offering covers comparisons among models, prompts and retrieval configurations, using Valohai LLM Evaluations and the open-source Conduit tool. This extends the same experimental discipline to an application whose model may be accessed through an API. The platform helps organize comparisons; it does not decide what an acceptable answer means for your business.
02 / AudienceFor teams whose experiments have become a shared service
Valohai is most relevant when several people need to reproduce, compare and hand off model work. A computer-vision team might need the exact training corpus behind a deployed detector. A software team might need to explain why a retrieval change improved answers for one customer group but harmed another. Both need a durable relationship between inputs, configuration and results.
The infrastructure page says workloads can run across existing cloud accounts and on-premises environments, with self-hosting available for organizations needing full platform control. This is attractive when data placement or reserved hardware already constrains the architecture. It still requires a clear agreement about the control plane, network access and support responsibilities for the chosen deployment.
The Domino blueprint offers a comparison for a broader enterprise data-science environment, while the ClearML blueprint covers another approach to experiments and compute management. A team making occasional calls to a hosted language model may not need a full ML operations platform. It should first identify which repeated work is currently unreliable or expensive to coordinate.
03 / WorkflowA proposed image-model release with a reproducible handoff
Consider a proposed evaluation for a manufacturer classifying surface defects from camera images. This is an illustrative design, not work performed in Valohai. Begin with a fixed historical image set, a record of inspection labels and a separate test group drawn from a later production period. Do not allow near-duplicate frames from one physical item to appear in both training and test data.
Define separate preparation, training and evaluation steps. The preparation step should record which images were removed, resized or relabelled, so a later accuracy change can be traced to its cause. Train one baseline before launching a parameter sweep. A large collection of runs is useful only if their differences are legible and the evaluation remains comparable.
Valohai’s lineage description connects model artifacts to code, dataset versions, parameters and execution environments. Use that record as the proposed release evidence. Ask a colleague who did not build the pipeline to find the training inputs for a chosen model and rerun the evaluation. That handoff tests the operational value more directly than a polished first-run demonstration.
Keep the deployment decision outside a single headline accuracy score. Separate false alarms from missed defects, inspect results by camera and product type, and record the impact of an unfamiliar lighting condition. A model with a better overall average may still be unsuitable for the rare defect that matters most. The application owner must choose the relevant thresholds.
Finally, rehearse a rejected release. Introduce a deliberately incomplete input set, stop a worker during processing and verify that the resulting run cannot be mistaken for an approved model. Preserve the previous production artifact and the evidence supporting it. The useful outcome is a traceable decision about a specific model version, including a workable route back if it causes problems.
04 / PricingUser licensing does not make compute unlimited
The current pricing page describes a fixed per-user monthly license and unlimited projects, experiments, pipelines and deployments within subscriptions. It requests a custom quote rather than publishing a numerical seat price. A free trial is advertised for 14 days. Those terms describe platform access; they should not be read as unlimited free hardware or model-provider usage.
The billing documentation separately lists machine-hour compute, managed storage and applicable platform fees. This is a consequential distinction beside the marketing promise of predictable user pricing. Ask the vendor to separate software licensing, infrastructure invoices and any managed-resource charges in the proposed contract. For your own cloud, include the cloud provider’s actual bill.
Build a forecast around a representative training cycle: preparation, unsuccessful experiments, accepted training, evaluation and retained artifacts. Include idle capacity and repeated data movement where they occur. The aim is to understand the total cost of a release, not to assume that a seat fee captures every resource consumed by work launched through the platform.
| Cost layer | Published basis | Budget question |
|---|---|---|
| Platform license | Per user per month; custom quote | Which users require seats? |
| Compute and storage | Resource charges described separately | Who invoices each resource? |
| Trial | 14 days advertised | Which deployment and resources are included? |

05 / DistinctionsThe evidence chain is as useful as the orchestration
The strongest distinction is the connection between execution and explanation. A job scheduler answers when a task ran. A useful ML history also answers which data it used, what changed and which result was approved. Keeping those relationships together can reduce the amount of organizational knowledge that exists only in one engineer’s memory.
For language-model applications, the equivalent discipline is to change one meaningful part of a retrieval setup while retaining the evaluation inputs. A new embedding model, a different chunking rule and a revised prompt can all affect the same answer. Valohai’s comparison tools are relevant because they organize that search space; the evaluator still needs well-chosen questions and trustworthy judgments.
Infrastructure flexibility is also a tradeoff rather than a universal advantage. Running near existing data can be valuable, but supporting several environments adds compatibility questions. In a pilot, use the actual runtime image, network policy and storage arrangement planned for production. A successful trial on an unrestricted development machine does not establish that the controlled environment is ready.
06 / QuestionsReproduction needs more than a saved run button
The lineage page uses strong language about reproducing prior results. In practice, a saved configuration cannot restore a deleted source dataset, an unavailable external API revision or an unretained container image. Establish retention for the artifacts required by your own pipeline. For nondeterministic training, define whether reproduction means identical bytes, a comparable metric range or simply the same documented procedure.
Check how externally hosted model calls appear in an evaluation record. A provider may change behavior without exposing the same level of checkpoint control as a local model. Keep the request settings, returned model identifiers and evaluation date, and decide what evidence is sufficient before treating two runs as comparable.
The published commercial material does not supply a numerical all-in price for the proposed deployment. Request explicit costs for user growth, managed resources and support, and clarify how the advertised trial maps to your infrastructure. This article did not create an account or verify account-specific entitlements, so those details remain contractual questions.
07 / DecisionChoose a recurring model problem to make visible
Valohai deserves evaluation when the hard part is keeping AI work reproducible and operable across people and infrastructure. Pick one existing pipeline whose history is difficult to reconstruct. The pilot succeeds if another engineer can explain the deployed model, reproduce the relevant evidence and safely reject a bad successor without depending on its original author.
Test the handoff
Use an existing pipeline and ask a second engineer to trace an accepted model back to its inputs.
Compare controlled variations
Retain a fixed question set while changing the model or retrieval configuration deliberately.
Check the actual coordination need
A small integration may need evaluation records without a full ML operations platform.
