Western Digital, now branded WD, supplies hard drives and storage platforms for the large data collections behind cloud and AI systems. Its most important buyer distinction is not simply a maximum capacity. It is whether the organization wants conventional HDD integration or can operate a storage stack designed around shingled magnetic recording, where additional density comes with different data-placement requirements.

In brief
  1. 01The offer Enterprise Ultrastar hard drives and storage platforms for capacity-intensive infrastructure.
  2. 02The fit Operators retaining training data, generated media, backup collections and other large datasets outside the fastest compute tier.
  3. 03The boundary WD and Sandisk are separate companies. This proposed workflow concerns HDD storage, not a review of Sandisk enterprise SSDs or measured application performance.

01 / ProductThe current company is the HDD side of a separated portfolio

Western Digital’s February 2026 brand announcement says it is now known as WD and emphasizes data-center infrastructure. Its corporate and product site remains on westerndigital.com. Keeping both names visible helps buyers connect current products with older support records and identify the supplier responsible for them.

The Sandisk separation FAQ explains the more consequential boundary: Sandisk became an independent publicly traded company in February 2025. Flash products and their support moved to Sandisk, including some products carrying licensed WD branding. HDD products and platforms remain with Western Digital. The logo printed on an older device therefore does not by itself establish which company supplies its current support.

WD’s data-center portfolio includes Ultrastar HDDs and storage platforms. It distinguishes conventional recording products such as the HC590 from UltraSMR products such as the HC690. The same portfolio discusses OptiNAND, which incorporates flash into the drive architecture, and physical-density technologies. OptiNAND does not turn an HDD into a general-purpose enterprise SSD; its role belongs to the HDD’s internal design.

02 / AudienceA capacity tier is useful when the organization controls data placement

The clearest reader is a storage architect responsible for keeping a large collection available over time. AI increases the number of potentially useful copies: original records, transformed datasets, generated outputs and versions retained for reproducibility. An HDD tier can serve that role when its retrieval behavior fits the workload. The important planning unit is the collection and its reuse schedule, rather than a drive chosen in isolation.

An organization operating its own object storage or distributed filesystem may have enough control to evaluate host-managed SMR. A team buying a general-purpose server replacement may prefer a conventional recording configuration already qualified by its system supplier. Both can be sensible. The engineering effort required to change write placement should be justified by the scale and stability of the storage workload.

The NetApp blueprint provides a related system and data-management perspective, while the VAST Data blueprint considers an integrated data platform for demanding AI workflows. WD participates lower in the physical storage stack. Comparing these layers helps distinguish a request for storage media from a requirement for namespaces, snapshots, access policies or a complete managed data service.

03 / WorkflowA proposed UltraSMR pilot makes write behavior the central question

Consider a proposed retained-media repository used to prepare multimodal training sets. Its original files arrive in batches and are read many times, while derived thumbnails and indexing metadata change more frequently. First separate those behaviors in a workload trace. A collection that is mostly immutable may offer a different opportunity from a filesystem that repeatedly overwrites small fragments across every device.

WD’s SMR explanation says host-managed SMR uses a different command set and imposes rules on where data may be written. Its density advantage should therefore be evaluated with software that explicitly supports the intended model. Do not insert a host-managed device into an unqualified storage stack and infer compatibility merely because the physical interface connects.

For the pilot, ask the storage-software provider to identify the supported drive family, host interface and placement policy. Keep original media in immutable objects or files according to that software’s documented approach. Place frequently updated metadata on an appropriate supported tier. This is a proposed architecture split, not a claim that WD automatically moves metadata or supplies a particular object-store implementation.

Run a full lifecycle using test data: ingestion, catalogue updates, a large training-set read, deletion of expired material and reuse of released space. Measure sustained behavior after the system has accumulated a realistic amount of used capacity. The initial empty-drive state may not expose the cost of reclaiming space or reorganizing writes. The operator needs to understand the mature repository, not just a freshly formatted demonstration.

Include simultaneous readers and a failed-device recovery. A training job may be tolerant of slower archive reads in normal conditions yet miss its preparation window while the repository rebuilds. Record whether the intended protection policy leaves enough headroom for that event. Capacity density is helpful only when the remaining system can still meet the application’s schedule during maintenance.

Compare the result with a conventional-recording control built on the Ultrastar HC590 route. Keep usable capacity, protection policy and workload trace comparable. The purpose is to discover whether the denser design repays its integration effort for this repository. No result from that proposed experiment is asserted here.

04 / PricingBuy the supported storage configuration, then compare usable capacity

Commercial basis from the WD data-center portfolio, HC590 and HC690, consulted 19 October 2026. Selected-SKU storefront pricing is configuration-specific; no universal fleet price or availability is implied.

WD exposes product-selection and sales-inquiry routes rather than one universal enterprise-storage tariff. Storefront pricing can be shown for a selected SKU and varies with configuration and market; no universal fleet or system price is quoted here. A fleet buyer should obtain the model, quantity, delivery schedule and applicable support scope in a current offer. A visible product page is evidence of a listed family, not proof of immediate stock for every variant.

The relevant economic comparison includes software integration. If UltraSMR requires changes to the repository’s placement or reclamation behavior, that engineering cost belongs alongside the drives and enclosure. Conversely, an already-supported stack can make density gains easier to adopt. This distinction is more useful than assuming the same percentage saving applies to every organization.

Compare raw drive capacity with the actual amount of data retained after protection, spare capacity and operational headroom. Also include the working copy used to feed training. Moving retained material to denser HDDs may reduce the capacity footprint while leaving the flash staging tier unchanged. That is a valid outcome if it reduces the cost of maintaining the whole dataset lifecycle.

05 / DistinctionsUltraSMR exposes the connection between software and recording density

WD’s public explanation makes a useful architectural point: host-managed recording changes are not purely mechanical upgrades. Software participates in realizing the capacity advantage. The same page describes contributions to open-source support and third-party storage approaches. Those examples show routes worth investigating, but they do not establish that every release, filesystem configuration or workload is ready for an arbitrary UltraSMR device.

The enterprise storage-platform overview adds an integration layer around the media. For some organizations, buying a defined platform will be more practical than qualifying every enclosure component themselves. The key distinction is who owns the assembled configuration and its interaction with the data software. That responsibility should remain visible even when a proposal emphasizes the drive brand.

06 / QuestionsResolve support identity, write semantics and supply separately

Older WD-branded flash devices can create a support trap after the separation. Use the product category and current manufacturer support guidance rather than a familiar logo to route the request. The separation FAQ explicitly assigns flash support to Sandisk. Keeping that distinction in inventory records prevents a hardware incident from turning into a search across the wrong company’s warranty pages.

For SMR, the unresolved detail is the complete supported software path: host commands, data placement, reclamation and recovery. A vendor statement about broad ecosystem progress does not settle compatibility with a particular release. Request the exact supported combination and exercise it with the workload’s changing-data behavior. That is where additional capacity can either become useful or introduce operational friction.

Finally, separate a company’s technology roadmap from a supply commitment. The current portfolio supports an informed discussion of HDD architecture, but customer-specific capacity allocations, lead times and negotiated pricing remain outside these public sources. An AI program planning several expansion phases should base each phase on a confirmed configuration rather than the largest announced future number.

07 / DecisionSelect WD according to the storage software you can operate

WD is relevant to AI because valuable data must remain accessible after the current training or inference job ends. Its HDD portfolio gives operators several ways to build that capacity. The decisive question is whether the organization can use the selected recording approach effectively across ingestion, repeated reads, deletion and recovery.
