Block is the company behind Square and other financial-technology businesses, with AI work spanning customer products and open developer tools. For a seller, the concrete opportunity is inside Square: Managerbot connects business information with proposed operational tasks that the seller can review and approve. For a builder, Block’s open-source work offers a different route to agent workflows. Those paths share an interest in useful actions, but they have different owners, access conditions and costs.

In brief
  1. 01The product. Managerbot connects Square business insights with supported seller workflows.
  2. 02The boundary. Account permissions, subscription features and approval still shape what can happen.
  3. 03The lineage. Block created goose and donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation; it is not a separate Block subscription.

01 / ProductOne company, several distinct AI surfaces

The Block corporate site establishes the parent identity behind Square and its related businesses. Its AI overview describes customer products, internal development systems and open contributions. This blueprint focuses on Square’s seller workflow because it provides a concrete path from business information to a reviewed action. It does not treat every brand, assistant or open project as an independent company.

The current US Managerbot support guide describes business snapshots, opportunities and data exploration alongside supported tasks. Examples include receiving inventory, preparing schedules, email campaigns and catalog updates. The distinction is between asking what happened and proposing what to change. The same interface can support both, but the consequence of a wrong summary differs from the consequence of a wrong account action.

Public pages also reflect an evolving product transition. The Square AI overview still presents Square AI with a beta label, while current US support describes Managerbot and its supported actions. Use the account’s actual product and entitlement as the implementation reference. Do not assume every capability, label or availability statement on a broader marketing page applies to every seller account or market.

02 / AudienceSellers whose operating data already lives in Square

The strongest fit is a business with usable sales, catalog and inventory information in Square and an owner who regularly turns that information into routine work. A store might investigate a stock discrepancy, prepare an inventory receipt or update a set of item records. The value comes from connecting a question to the operational context already present in the system, rather than exporting data into an unrelated conversation and manually recreating every result.

For commerce businesses evaluating a broader platform relationship, Shopify provides useful context around AI inside merchant operations. Developers considering an agent that spans several applications can compare that integrated approach with the tool and authentication layer discussed in Composio. The decision concerns where the authoritative record lives and who controls changes to it. A broader tool catalog is not automatically a better fit for a single store workflow.

This is less useful when the underlying catalog is inconsistent or nobody can identify the correct stock count. An assistant can make an existing record easier to query without making the record true. Before automating a task, identify the person who can resolve discrepancies and the evidence they use. The first project should have a clear start, a reviewable proposed change and a way to verify the final account state.

03 / WorkflowA proposed inventory-receiving workflow with seller review

Consider a proposed pilot for a small retailer receiving a delivery from a regular supplier. The objective is to reduce repetitive entry while preserving correct item quantities and location assignments. The workflow uses the documented inventory-receiving capability as an evaluation target; Sequenced has not operated a seller account or measured the result. Start with one delivery whose invoice, packing list and physical contents can be compared directly.

First inspect the records before asking for an action. Confirm that supplier identifiers map to the intended catalog items and that pack sizes are understood. A box containing twelve units is different from one sellable item. If the existing catalog uses a different naming convention from the supplier, write down the mapping the reviewer expects. Otherwise a plausible match can quietly create a costly stock error.

Next, provide the relevant delivery document through the supported workflow and request a proposed receipt. Ask for a concise account of the matched items, quantities and unresolved entries. Keep exceptions visible rather than encouraging the assistant to guess. A missing item number, substituted product or unreadable quantity should become a question for the receiving staff. The useful output is a reviewable draft with explicit gaps, not a confident-looking completed transaction.

Have the seller compare the proposal with the physical delivery. Separate the quantity ordered from the quantity actually received, and identify damaged goods before they enter available stock. Review the destination location as well as the item totals. A mathematically correct receipt posted to the wrong location can still cause poor availability decisions. Record the corrections so the team understands whether the remaining work is document interpretation or catalog maintenance.

Approve only the intended change, then inspect the resulting purchase-order and inventory records. Do not treat a conversational confirmation as the only evidence that the task completed. A useful acceptance check compares the before-and-after counts with the approved receipt. If the response is interrupted, determine the actual state before asking the assistant to repeat the operation. This protects against duplicate entries without assuming a particular undocumented retry mechanism.

Finally, measure total handling time and corrections across a small series of comparable deliveries. Include review time, follow-up questions and later reconciliation. A faster first draft is not necessarily a faster receiving process if staff spend longer finding errors afterward. Expand only when the team can describe which documents work well, which exceptions require manual handling and who owns the final inventory record.

Keep unrelated actions outside the pilot. An inventory receipt should not also trigger a promotional campaign or a supplier purchase without a separate decision. Square’s Managerbot product discussion emphasizes surfacing work and helping sellers act with review. For this proposed evaluation, make that review visible through a narrow task scope and an identifiable approver.

04 / PricingSeparate Square plan costs from AI feature entitlement

The US Square pricing page lists Free, Plus and Premium base plans at $0, $49 and $149 per month per location. Payment processing and relevant additional services remain separate considerations. Those plan prices are not a standalone Managerbot tariff or evidence that every proposed AI action is included. Confirm the actual feature in the seller’s account before using a base plan as the project budget.

Square Plus$49 per month per locationCheck which operational features justify the upgrade
Square Premium$149 per month per locationMatch advanced requirements to the actual plan scope
Managerbot workflowAccount and subscription capabilities applyObtain a specific entitlement answer; do not infer a separate universal AI price

US commercial context checked 14 October 2026 from Square pricing and Managerbot support. USD base plan amounts are per location; processing and other applicable charges are additional.

The support guide explains that Managerbot can identify a seller’s subscription and recommend an upgrade when a requested feature needs another tier. Treat that recommendation as a commercial decision to inspect. Compare the required capability with the existing process and expected workload. For a retailer with several locations, calculate the full location footprint and any associated processing or service charges rather than evaluating only one headline monthly amount.

05 / DistinctionsOperational context and open agent work are different strengths

Square’s structural advantage is proximity to the seller’s operating records. A question about an item can lead to an action in the same business environment, with fewer manual transfers between tools. That can reduce coordination effort for a well-defined task. The benefit depends on the quality of the records and the limits of the supported workflow; it is not evidence that the assistant can safely operate every part of the business.

Block’s builder contribution follows a different path. Its AI page states that goose was created at Block and donated to the Agentic AI Foundation. The project is an open-source agent with local execution, model choice and tool connections through standards such as MCP. Its repository provides the current project identity and Apache-2.0 license. A team evaluating goose is evaluating open software and its own configuration, rather than buying Square Managerbot.

These paths also have different economics. Open-source availability does not make model inference, hosting, integration or supervision free. A seller-facing feature may reduce setup work by operating within an existing account, while an open agent gives builders more responsibility and flexibility. Choose based on the workflow and operating model. The existence of both approaches in Block’s history does not imply that their permissions or commercial terms are interchangeable.

06 / QuestionsPermissions, mistakes and regional differences remain material

US support identifies account owners and full-access team members as the intended users. It says Managerbot requires internet access and supports only certain data and actions, with seller validation needed because language-model responses can be wrong. Those constraints should shape the pilot. Confirm the permitted user and available surface before designing a process that assumes any employee can operate it from any device.

The Square Generative AI Terms reinforce the need to assess generated output and the handling of information used for AI functionality. For a proposed task, inspect what information must be supplied and what gets recorded. Also distinguish reversing an account edit from reversing its external effects. A corrected inventory value and an email already delivered to customers have different recovery paths, even if both began as an assistant action.

07 / DecisionChoose one action with a verifiable result

Block is a strong AI-related company to study because its work connects models to everyday seller operations and to the wider agent ecosystem. For a merchant, begin with a narrow supported task, a responsible approver and an account record that proves completion. For a developer, evaluate the open project on its current governance, integrations and operating costs. Keep those decisions distinct while learning from the common emphasis on useful action.
