GE Vernova applies software and AI to energy infrastructure through grid orchestration, asset-performance management and predictive analytics. GridOS helps utilities coordinate information and operations; SmartSignal analyzes equipment behavior to support maintenance decisions. These products address different operational layers. This blueprint explains their relationship and proposes a reliability evaluation, while respecting the sale of Proficy to TPG. It does not report hands-on testing or independently verify the vendor's performance claims.

In brief
  1. 01Current scope GridOS, asset-performance software and SmartSignal remain the focus of this article.
  2. 02Ownership boundary GE Vernova completed the sale of Proficy to TPG in March 2026.
  3. 03Buyer Utilities and asset-intensive operators with defined grid or equipment decisions.

01 / ProductEnergy software spans grid operations and individual assets

GridOS is a platform and application portfolio for grid orchestration. GE Vernova describes a federated data foundation, intelligent applications, a zero-trust security model and hybrid deployment options. Its purpose is to help utilities coordinate a changing electricity system. That is broader than installing an isolated forecasting model, and narrower than assuming one application can replace every operational system.

Asset Performance Management addresses the condition, reliability and maintenance of equipment through composable applications. SmartSignal provides AI/ML predictive analytics that can be used within that broader APM environment. Grid operations and asset reliability may inform each other, but the relevant users, data and acceptance criteria differ.

The ownership boundary matters. GE Vernova's 2 March 2026 completion announcement states that TPG now owns and controls Proficy. Some GE Vernova navigation and older articles still mention that manufacturing-software portfolio. This blueprint excludes Proficy from the current GE Vernova offer rather than using a surviving webpage as evidence of unchanged ownership.

02 / AudienceFor utility and reliability teams with operational context

GridOS is relevant to utilities coordinating network models, real-time operations, distributed resources and field work. The buyer needs an operational architecture and a clear understanding of which systems remain authoritative. A company simply consuming cloud AI does not need grid orchestration software because its applications use electricity.

SmartSignal is more directly relevant to reliability teams overseeing equipment such as turbines, compressors or pumps. Those teams need adequate instrumentation, known operating regimes and a process for investigating alerts. A model can surface unusual behavior, but someone still needs to decide whether it reflects a developing fault, a normal transition or a measurement problem.

The Cognite blueprint provides an adjacent view of industrial data context and AI. The Schneider Electric blueprint is useful for energy management and connected infrastructure. Compare the chosen workflow and system boundary; a data platform, grid-control application and equipment-maintenance analytic should not be treated as interchangeable purchases.

03 / WorkflowA proposed reliability pilot for a generating facility

Imagine a generating facility evaluating predictive analytics for a small group of critical rotating assets. This is a proposed workflow. Begin with the maintenance decisions the team wants to improve: earlier investigation of a developing condition, better prioritization or more useful planning of an intervention. Choose assets whose data and maintenance histories can be reviewed by an experienced engineer.

Build a record of operating modes and known changes. A machine after an overhaul may behave differently from the same machine before it. Tag sensor replacements, maintenance interventions and sustained changes in duty. Without that context, a model may identify a difference that is real but operationally unsurprising.

SmartSignal's product description explains anomaly detection through the difference between observed values and modeled normal behavior, with diagnostic and time-to-action analysis. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the relevant analytic on representative historical periods. Require the engineer to inspect the supporting traces rather than evaluating only a summarized alert label.

Separate model fit from response quality. An early deviation matters only if it gives the team a useful opportunity to investigate or act. For each historical event, record when a warning would have appeared, what information was available then and which intervention could realistically have followed. Avoid judging a model with knowledge that only became available after a failure.

Define the workflow into APM or the facility's existing maintenance system. The APM overview describes asset strategies, condition-based work, predictive maintenance and integration with other operational data sources. For the pilot, choose a single handover: an engineer accepts an alert, records the evidence and creates an accountable investigation or work request.

Include healthy periods and instrumentation faults in the evaluation. A pilot that only replays known failures can hide an excessive alert burden. Track repeated alerts, unresolved cases and the time engineers spend deciding whether an issue is actionable. The expected result is a better reliability process, rather than the largest possible number of model notifications.

If the organization also operates a grid, keep the GridOS discussion connected but separate. GridOS Data Fabric offers federated access and metadata context across distributed information. It can help establish shared access to grid data, but it does not by itself demonstrate that the generating facility's maintenance analytic is accurate or appropriately integrated.

04 / PricingSoftware, deployment and managed services have different costs

GridOS applicationsScoped utility software proposalApplications, deployment and integration with existing operations
GridOS Data FabricDefined data-foundation scopeMetadata, access, source systems and model ownership
SmartSignal softwareSales proposal or AWS private offerAsset coverage, analytic configuration and support

Commercial routes checked 5 October 2026 in GridOS, APM and SmartSignal. SmartSignal explicitly offers custom AWS private pricing and managed-service options; no universal public tariff is assumed.

The reviewed pages use expert-led sales and proposal routes. SmartSignal also advertises an AWS Marketplace route for a private offer with custom pricing. That is a purchasing channel, not a public list price. A quote should specify the asset set, selected applications, deployment arrangement, support and implementation work.

The SmartSignal page describes Industrial Managed Services alongside software purchase or subscription, and a turnkey outsourced option. These represent different allocations of work. A facility with an established monitoring center may want software and specialist support; another may want the vendor to perform more ongoing monitoring and triage. Compare the delivered service, not only the license line.

For GridOS, ask which applications and data-foundation capabilities are included. The distribution portfolio brings planning, operations, distributed-energy-resource management, field execution and visual intelligence together. The project still needs to establish how existing systems connect and which migration or coexistence work is required. Portfolio breadth should not disguise an undefined implementation scope.

05 / DistinctionsDomain context shapes the value of the AI

GE Vernova's distinction is the application of analytics to energy equipment and grid operations with domain-specific models and workflows. SmartSignal's emphasis on expected equipment behavior makes the operating context central. A temperature value can be ordinary under one load and unusual under another; useful analysis needs to distinguish those situations.

GridOS Data Fabric addresses a separate problem: relevant utility information often remains distributed among systems. Its FAQ explicitly distinguishes the product from a central data lake or warehouse. Federated access can preserve distributed data ownership while making information usable across applications, provided the metadata, identities and access rules remain trustworthy.

GridOS for Distribution organizes several operational functions around that governed foundation. For a utility, the practical benefit to test is whether a planning or field decision gains the right current context. A visually unified interface is less important than whether the underlying network model and operational information agree when the decision must be made.

06 / QuestionsConfirm model applicability and the current product boundary

For predictive maintenance, ask which failure modes are observable with the installed measurements and which remain outside scope. No model can turn an unmeasured physical condition into guaranteed knowledge. The evaluation should show how unhealthy inputs are identified and how the team distinguishes a data-quality issue from an asset condition.

For grid software, determine which data model is authoritative and how changes propagate between planning and operational systems. A federated view can improve access while still exposing conflicting records. Assign ownership for resolving those conflicts before relying on the combined view for consequential operational work.

Also confirm current contracting and support responsibility for any product historically associated with GE software. The Proficy sale shows why old navigation is insufficient. Use the current legal entity and product agreement, especially when an architecture spans GE Vernova's retained energy software and software now controlled by another company.

07 / DecisionChoose the operational layer before choosing the AI label

GE Vernova is worth evaluating when an organization needs energy-specific software that connects data with grid or asset decisions. Start with the operational problem, then choose the relevant application and integration boundary. A reliability pilot and a utility-wide grid-orchestration program have different scale, evidence and ownership requirements.

For the generating facility, success means a useful warning that leads to a well-supported investigation and a recorded outcome. For the utility, it may mean better coordination across systems using consistent grid context. In either case, judge the selected workflow on local evidence and keep advertised savings separate from the project's measured result.
