Perplexity connects web research with answers, projects and finished work

Perplexity combines an AI answer interface with web research, persistent project context and tools for creating finished work. Its appeal is the connection between asking a question and following the sources behind the answer. The current product family also includes Computer for longer tasks, Comet for browser-based assistance and a separately billed API platform. For a buyer, the useful starting point is the job: a quick lookup, a researched brief, a shared knowledge project or an application you are building.

The current product overview¹ distinguishes the answer engine, Computer, Comet and API platform. These are related experiences with different responsibilities. Finding a source, producing a briefing and taking action in a browser should not be treated as the same level of delegation. For this profile, the central thread is how a reader moves from a question to evidence and then to a usable result.

In Research mode⁴, Perplexity describes an iterative process of searching, reading and reasoning that produces a report. The mode selects its own model combination rather than asking the user to choose a single model. Our interpretation is that this is most useful when the question needs several connected searches. A simple factual lookup may not benefit from a long report, especially when the authoritative source is already known.

The asset-creation guide⁶ describes documents, spreadsheets, presentations and HTML applications, with previews and downloads. It explicitly associates automatic citations with documents, so inspect the evidence trail when converting work into another format. A presentation can lose useful qualifications as prose is shortened. Check the exported result itself before treating it as ready for colleagues or customers.

02 / AudienceWho should consider Perplexity?

Perplexity is a plausible fit for people who repeatedly turn public information into briefings: product teams, consultants, founders and analysts. It can help organise an unfamiliar subject and identify material to read next. The strongest evaluation tasks contain a real decision and a defined audience. Asking for an overview of an industry is less revealing than asking which published requirements affect a specific implementation choice.

Academic evidence synthesis is a different job. Our Elicit profile explains a paper-centred process with explicit screening and extraction stages. A Perplexity answer with scholarly citations is not automatically a reproducible literature search. Choose the workflow according to how you must document coverage and inclusion, rather than assuming that the presence of references makes all research tools interchangeable.

For an engineering team building search into its own product, Exa’s API approach illustrates another boundary. A finished research interface supplies the conversation and presentation; an API leaves those decisions to the application builder. Perplexity also sells API access, but a consumer subscription and a developer account have different billing and operational requirements.

03 / WorkflowA worked workflow for a supplier briefing

Consider a proposed task: prepare a brief comparing the published integration requirements of suppliers on an existing shortlist. This is an illustrative workflow, not a product test we performed. Define the output before researching: supported integration route, required account level, implementation dependency, evidence URL and unresolved question. This makes the research useful for a decision instead of producing a broad promotional comparison.

Give the request a clear source rule, such as preferring current official documentation for product capabilities and pricing. Ask it to distinguish a documented feature from an assumption. If the public site is inaccessible or silent, preserve that uncertainty. A report that honestly leaves a field unresolved is more useful than one that fills the gap from an outdated announcement without saying so.

For ongoing work, Projects⁵ provide persistent context, files, instructions and collaboration. The current documentation uses Projects where older guides may say Spaces. Keep the shortlist and the evaluation brief together, but check who can view that material. An internal note about a supplier’s negotiating position is different from a public product manual, even if both help answer the same question.

Inspect the important citations as the report develops. Open the source and check the subject, date, billing context and qualification. A statement that a feature exists may be true only for an enterprise contract or a particular deployment. Ask follow-up questions about those boundaries. Do not mistake multiple citations for independent corroboration when they all repeat the same announcement.

Separate the findings from the recommendation. The findings record what each source establishes. The recommendation weighs those facts against your team’s constraints, such as who will maintain the integration and which system must remain authoritative. Preserve the reasoning so another person can disagree with the recommendation without having to rediscover the underlying evidence.

When turning the brief into a document or presentation, check it after export. Confirm that links still point to the intended evidence, tables retain their labels and unresolved items remain visible. Recalculate any totals outside the prose where necessary. The finished file is the deliverable your colleagues will use, so its accuracy matters independently of how good the conversation looked.

The pricing page² and plan guide³, checked on 15 September 2026, separate individual subscriptions, enterprise seats and programmatic access. The following selected USD figures describe their published entry points. Confirm local currency, taxes and the intended billing route at checkout; feature limits and promotional credits can change independently of the subscription price.

An allowance is not a promise of unlimited research in every mode. The plan guide separates search, research, creation and upload limits. Estimate how often your actual work uses each. A person doing occasional lookups has a different requirement from a team generating long research reports and revising attached files throughout the day. A higher plan only earns its place if those additional capabilities solve a recurring constraint.

The Max help page⁷ also distinguishes a web upgrade from creating a new mobile subscription. That detail is worth checking before changing plans. For a team purchase, start with administration and data handling as well as usage: access removal, shared projects and ownership of work may matter more than a particular model selection.

05 / DistinctionsCitations are the start of verification

Perplexity’s distinctive experience is that an answer and its supporting material sit close together. This can reduce the work of getting oriented, but it moves some effort into checking the relationship between a claim and a source. The best question is not how many references appeared. It is whether the references support the conclusion and whether the important counterexample or limitation was omitted.

A useful comparison with ordinary web search is control over synthesis. A results page leaves you to read and combine the material. A research assistant proposes that combination for you. That can be convenient, especially for unfamiliar terminology, but it also means an early framing mistake may shape later searches. Change the question deliberately when exploring competing explanations, and inspect whether the source set changes with it.

For a founder studying the business, the broader product lesson is continuity. Research becomes more valuable when the output can be kept, questioned, updated and turned into work for another person. Projects and file creation support that direction. The evaluation should still follow the whole handoff: finding evidence, checking it, preserving context and delivering a result somebody can act on.

06 / QuestionsPrivacy, file retention and current limitations

What happens to information you submit?

Perplexity’s data-collection guidance⁸ says consumer accounts have an AI-training opt-out, while enterprise data is not used for training. It also says opting out does not stop processing required to operate the service. Those are vendor disclosures, not a claim that every confidential document is suitable for upload. Match the account type and sharing arrangements to the information involved.

The file-privacy guide⁹ distinguishes session attachments from persistent project files, and warns that making a session public can expose attached material. Retention and sharing are separate questions. Before sending a colleague a research link, inspect the material included in that session rather than assuming the link contains only the final answer.

What is changing for enterprise files?

The organisation-file migration notice¹⁰, accessed on 15 September 2026, says the old Enterprise organization repository is being retired and files remaining after 1 October 2026 will be deleted. This does not describe all Perplexity files: the notice distinguishes Projects and connected services. Existing users of that repository should preserve the required files and verify access in the chosen destination.

We have not independently benchmarked Perplexity’s answer accuracy, source coverage or performance on private business data. A useful pilot includes a recently changed product, an ambiguous company name and a question with conflicting evidence. Judge the correction effort and final usefulness. The product’s confident tone should not determine how much confidence the reader places in the result.
