Qualys gives security teams a way to bring AI systems into the same conversation as vulnerable servers, exposed applications and cloud configuration. TotalAI adds model inventory and behavioral testing to its broader risk platform. The useful question is whether a team can turn a model finding into a reproducible engineering task, with the exact endpoint, test configuration and commercial allowance understood.
- 01Best fit Security and AI engineering teams that need evidence about deployed models alongside existing exposure data.
- 02Key boundary An automated model scan samples behavior under configured conditions; it does not certify a complete application as safe.
- 03Commercial detail The current TotalAI guide specifies one model and up to five scans per month per license. Generic subscription language must not override that limit.
01 / CompanyAn AI assessment layer inside a wider security company
Qualys is an enterprise security provider whose platform combines asset visibility, vulnerability management and risk operations. TotalAI focuses on AI and large language model workloads. Its current introduction describes discovery, vulnerability detection, specialized model scanning and compliance-oriented reporting. It requires a Qualys subscription with the TotalAI module enabled; it is not a separate consumer chatbot or a public model host.
The product fits an operational distinction that often gets lost in AI purchasing. A model can sit on a well-configured cloud service and still respond badly to adversarial inputs. Conversely, a model that behaves well during a test can depend on exposed infrastructure. Qualys brings these questions into a shared security estate, but the evidence from each layer still needs to be interpreted separately.
The model inventory guide distinguishes models that have been onboarded for scanning from potential models discovered through Azure TotalCloud services. Discovery therefore does not automatically mean a completed assessment. An inventory entry needs confirmation, connection details and a scan before it becomes useful behavioral evidence.
02 / AudienceFor teams that must hand findings to model owners
A strong fit is an organization already managing security findings in Qualys and now deploying several model-backed applications. Security staff can establish a common way to register endpoints, choose tests and route findings to the engineers who own the application. The operational benefit would be fewer disconnected spreadsheets and more consistent evidence, rather than a claim that one scanner can replace every AI safety discipline.
A second fit is a platform team evaluating different deployment configurations for the same model. Its question might concern an instruction hierarchy, retrieval boundary or changed system prompt. The evaluation needs consistent test settings and recorded versions so that a change in results can be investigated. A model name alone is not enough to identify what was tested.
Teams primarily seeking conversational monitoring or organizational policy management should compare that requirement carefully. Noma Security provides another AI security reference point, while Tenable is relevant to the broader exposure-management decision. These comparisons concern scope and operating model; this article does not rank their detection quality.
03 / WorkflowProposed workflow: evaluate one owned endpoint
Begin with an endpoint owned by the organization and an agreed non-production test window. Record the model version, hosting service, system instructions, retrieval connections and any tools it may call. Use synthetic evaluation data and a bounded test account. This is a proposed evaluation, not a report of Sequenced having scanned a customer system.
The onboarding instructions document runtime-specific connection fields, including cloud connectors for supported AWS Bedrock and Azure configurations. They also distinguish external scanning from internal scanner appliances. Select the supported path for the deployment rather than assuming that every model with a similar API is interchangeable.
Create an option profile that fixes the detection scope and relevant generation settings. The guide includes controls such as response timeout, retry attempts and parallelism. Choose a small initial set of concerns, preserve the configuration, and check whether requests affect the provider's own usage bill or rate limits.
After the run, inspect the finding and reproduce it within the authorized test environment. A failed test may reveal a useful problem, a configuration mismatch or an unsuitable expectation. Give the application owner the evidence and a bounded corrective task. Repeat with the same settings after the fix, using the remaining scan allowance deliberately.
04 / Commercial modelBudget by model and assessment cadence
The subscription page describes pricing that depends on selected applications and quantities such as IP addresses, web applications and users. It does not publish a universal TotalAI cash tariff. A quote should identify the modules and quantities used by this specific deployment, not simply repeat the generic platform language.
The TotalAI introduction is more specific: one license permits onboarding one model and a maximum of five scans for that model in a month. The general subscription page also advertises unlimited scans, so readers should apply the product-specific limit to TotalAI and obtain written confirmation if a commercial proposal uses different terms. Do not infer unlimited model tests from the broader subscription page.
A useful budget conversation starts with the number of endpoints that need separate coverage and the intended retest schedule. Ask how staging and production variants, model replacements and failed runs are counted. Scanner deployment, endpoint inference usage and engineering review are separate workload considerations even when the Qualys price is bundled.
| Component | Commercial basis | Decision to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Platform subscription | Quote based on applications and licensed quantities | Which modules and deployment components are included? |
| TotalAI model license | One model; maximum five scans monthly in current guide | How are variants, retests and failed runs counted? |
| Model hosting and review | Separate provider usage and staff work | Who pays inference charges and validates findings? |

05 / DistinctionsThe useful distinction is configurable evidence
Qualys exposes concrete testing controls instead of presenting AI risk only as a narrative score. The option-profile documentation lists detection families including sensitive information disclosure, prompt injection and hallucination-related checks. That gives a reviewer a basis for asking which behaviors were examined and which were outside the run. Selecting all available detections still does not make the test exhaustive.
The detections guide describes findings with a Qualys identifier, category, affected models, severity and the percentage of tests that failed. Those fields support triage and repeatability. A percentage inside a particular test set should not be translated into a probability that the application will fail in production.
There is also a practical distinction between discovering potential assets and validating their behavior. Keeping those states separate can help a team identify an inventory gap without pretending it has already tested the asset. The most useful evaluation would measure whether engineers can trace each finding back to an endpoint and a configuration they recognize.
06 / Open questionsConfirm coverage and the meaning of a result
Documentation evolves at different speeds. The model-details page lists supported hosting families, while the onboarding page contains the actual connection choices. For a proposed deployment, verify the precise runtime, authentication path and scanner requirements with the current account. Do not use an older product announcement as proof that a newly introduced cloud service is fully supported.
The introduction identifies a Web Application Scanning engine prerequisite and the need for an internal scanner where applicable. That is an implementation dependency, not a reason to assume the existing network path is ready. A trial should demonstrate connectivity, request logging and an explicit owner for credentials before interpreting an empty findings screen as success.
Finally, keep model behavior and application authorization separate. A model scan cannot by itself establish that every retrieval document, action tool or downstream system enforces the intended permissions. Ask the team to show what the scan can observe. Anything outside that view belongs in complementary application testing and design review, with its own evidence.
07 / DecisionChoose a repeatable assessment, then expand
Qualys is a useful candidate when AI assessment needs to become part of an existing security operation. Its value rests on a disciplined chain from model registration through configured testing to a finding that an engineer can investigate. The strongest first milestone is a small set of reproducible findings and resolved cases, rather than a large inventory with unclear test status.
Start with one application, define what constitutes a meaningful failure, and agree how many iterations the license supports. If the team can reproduce a finding, change the relevant control and explain the retest result, it has evidence for expanding the approach. If it cannot, resolve the observability or configuration gap before treating a dashboard as assurance.
