Riskified applies machine learning to ecommerce decisions, combining fraud assessment with chargeback protection, policy-abuse controls and dispute operations. Its central buying proposition is not just a risk score: the Chargeback Guarantee product links order decisions to a commercial allocation of eligible losses. Merchants therefore need to evaluate approval behavior, fulfillment and contractual coverage together. A technically correct integration can still be commercially incomplete if those boundaries are unclear.

In brief
  1. 01The offer. AI commerce decisions connected to protection and operations.
  2. 02The distinction. Order approval, policy abuse and chargeback disputes are separate jobs.
  3. 03The constraint. Full integration documentation requires partner access.

01 / ProductCommerce decisions from checkout through returns

The Riskified platform brings together storefront signals, transaction information and merchant-network intelligence. Its Beacon collects device and behavioral data, while decisioning and analytics support operational action. Riskified describes learned features, identity linking and analyst tools rather than a simple rule that rejects every unfamiliar shopper. Those mechanisms are vendor-described capabilities; they do not establish accuracy for a particular merchant.

Chargeback Guarantee provides approve-or-decline decisions with a guarantee attached to covered transactions. Policy Protect addresses abuse of returns, refunds, promotions and related policies. Dispute Resolve assembles and submits evidence for chargebacks. The difference matters: preventing a fraudulent order, declining an abusive refund and contesting a dispute are separate decisions with different evidence and customer consequences.

The platform also includes account and checkout capabilities. A merchant need not assume that every product is included in a Chargeback Guarantee agreement. Begin with the point in the journey that needs improvement and map the adjacent capabilities from there. This keeps the evaluation tied to a real operational problem instead of treating the whole product catalog as one indivisible purchase.

02 / AudienceMerchants balancing approvals, fraud and service policies

Riskified is relevant to retailers and other ecommerce businesses where fraud decisions affect revenue and fulfillment. A merchant expanding to unfamiliar markets may worry about rejecting legitimate orders that look different from its historical customer base. Another may already approve orders effectively but lose money through repeated refund abuse. Those problems require different starting datasets and different measures of success.

The Shopify blueprint explains the commerce platform around the store and checkout. Riskified is a specialized decision and risk-management layer that can integrate with a commerce stack. The Experian blueprint offers a broader identity and data comparison. These are adjacent roles: a storefront, an identity-data provider and a commerce guarantee product should not be compared as though each replaces all the others.

A very small merchant should first establish the actual cost and workload of the problem it wants to solve. A guarantee may be valuable, but it also changes operating procedures and introduces contractual conditions. Conversely, a complex merchant with several fulfillment systems should not assume that installing a connector completes the project. The integration must preserve order status and evidence wherever the business actually operates.

03 / WorkflowA proposed rollout that follows the order after approval

Consider a retailer selling physical goods online and fulfilling some orders from stores. This proposed evaluation is not a Riskified implementation tested by Sequenced. Start with the existing sequence: customer session, order creation, payment authorization, fraud decision, allocation and shipment or collection. Identify the event that currently permits fulfillment, because a new decision must arrive before that action to change it reliably.

Riskified's documentation overview lists APIs and platform connectors, while noting that full documentation is available to integrating and partnered merchants. Use the appropriate supported route, then obtain the current detailed specification. This review did not access those gated instructions. The pilot design therefore describes acceptance requirements rather than asserting undocumented request fields or retry semantics.

Test ordinary approved and declined orders, followed by a delayed decision and a later order modification. A warehouse should not interpret the absence of a decline as an approval. A customer-service override should have an owner and a recorded reason. Determine how such an override affects guarantee coverage before using it in production. The ability to change a decision in an operational tool is not itself proof that the original commercial protection survives.

For store collection, trace the evidence that shows who received the goods and when. For shipment, connect dispatch and delivery records to the same order identity used during screening. The point is not to gather every possible document; it is to retain the evidence needed for the actual fulfillment route. If a chargeback later arrives, the team should not have to reconstruct the order from incompatible identifiers across several systems.

Evaluate Policy Protect separately on a defined return or promotion policy. A high return rate can reflect product sizing, fulfillment problems or ordinary customer behavior, so it should not automatically become an abuse label. Review the cases where a proposed intervention would inconvenience a legitimate customer. The merchant's policy and service promise remain important context even when network signals indicate repeat behavior.

Finally, run a dispute exercise using a resolved historical case with appropriate permissions. Ask the operations team to locate the order, see the evidence and understand what would be submitted. Dispute Resolve publicly describes automated collection and an editor for adding evidence. The practical acceptance criterion is a complete, accurate case assembled in time, not simply the existence of a generated evidence packet.

04 / PricingApproved-order economics depend on the agreement

The Chargeback Guarantee page says merchants pay for approved orders that generate revenue. It does not publish a universal percentage or fixed price. The service terms place services and related schedules in order forms. Consequently, a merchant needs a proposal covering its products, order population and guarantee conditions before calculating an expected total cost.

A useful comparison separates vendor fees, losses retained by the merchant, disputed amounts recovered and the cost of internal work. Keep gross approved order value distinct from contribution margin: approving additional orders is not automatically profitable if fulfillment or return costs dominate. These are suggested analytical categories, not financial outcomes established by the public materials.

05 / DistinctionsThe guarantee changes the product boundary

Riskified's most consequential distinction is the connection between its decision and the treatment of covered losses. A merchant buying only a score decides how to act and typically retains the resulting exposure. A guaranteed decision adds a contractual component to that workflow. That makes the details of order submission, approval and fulfillment part of product quality, alongside the predictive assessment itself.

Policy Protect adds a different dimension by focusing on customer identity and behavior across repeated interactions. Its page describes identity clustering and configurable policies through Decision Studio. A retailer can use that distinction to ask whether a problem concerns a single transaction or a sequence of claims and promotions. It should still preserve room for legitimate exceptions rather than assuming a cluster is proof of wrongdoing.

Dispute operations complete another part of the journey. The public description allows different levels of automation and manual evidence editing. That can be useful when the merchant has important fulfillment evidence that a generic feed does not capture. The evaluation should show how that evidence enters the process and whether a reviewer can correct an inaccurate assertion before submission.

06 / QuestionsDocumentation access and contract restrictions are material

The documentation gate limits what can be verified from public sources. Sequenced confirmed the published integration routes but did not inspect the full partner API reference or run a transaction. A buyer should obtain that material before estimating implementation effort, especially for mixed fulfillment, several storefronts or custom order-management systems. Public claims of simple integration do not answer those architectural questions.

The reviewed service terms also contain a restriction on receiving third-party fraud-mitigation services during the agreement term. The order form can take precedence where terms conflict. This is consequential for a proposed parallel vendor test: agree the permitted evaluation arrangement before assuming two providers can run side by side. The terms additionally restrict using the service for credit-eligibility and other specified purposes, reinforcing that this is commerce risk tooling.

Guarantee language should be read with its applicable schedules and operational requirements. An approved order, a successful payment authorization and a covered chargeback are related but different states. The merchant needs a reconciliation process that can explain all three. A marketing statement about eliminating losses does not remove the need to understand exclusions, reporting deadlines or the treatment of modified orders.

07 / DecisionChoose the part of the commerce journey to improve

A

Improve checkout approvals with coverage

If false declines and fraud losses are the central problem, evaluate Chargeback Guarantee together with fulfillment and claims handling. Request the actual order form and guarantee schedule before modeling savings.

Assess decisions and coverage together
B

Address repeated policy abuse

If the loss arises from returns, refunds or promotions, begin with a specific Policy Protect use case. Define legitimate exceptions and customer-service recovery before enforcing a new policy.

Evaluate a bounded policy
C

Reduce dispute-processing work

If order decisions already work well, examine Dispute Resolve around evidence quality, deadlines and gateway connections. Automating an incomplete record will not make the resulting dispute persuasive.
